I finally got back to post a few pics. Chase and I have been busy doing the rest of the body work on the bus. Here are a few shots of the passenger side rust.

Its difficult to see but the PO idea of a good repair was to place a piece of metal over the rust and braze it in. You can see what happened the rust was never taken care of and it came back.

There has allways been a stigma with reguards to body filler. If body filler is used correctly there is absolutly no problem with it. First you can not put body filler over paint don't do it. Second it sould be used after you have actually pulled out the dent. Your filler should never be more than a 1/4 inch thick. If it is you did not pull the dent out far enough. Most of mine is no thicker than a sixteenth of an inch.

I am telling you what I do and how I do it. I am sure there are a million ideas of how to do it but this is mine. If your interested in learning a little about body filler tune in if your afraid of filler then move on.

First the panel is striped of all its paint. The dents have been worked and I have ground the pannel with a 36 grit grinding disc.

The next set of pictures are a strait edge against the panel in the lowest point you can see on the tape measure its a little more than a 16th

My first pass is to cover the welds and any panel replace ment pieces with some long strand fiberglass reinforced filler. This stuff resists shrinkage its water proof and is as hard as nails.

This is sanded using 36 grit on an 8 inch national detroit bondo hog and an Hutchens inline sander with the same grit

The next step is to go over the panel with a light weight filler I like rage/rage gold and Z grip. I don't mess a round with filling in individual dents. I make large covering passes to encompas the whole panel. A little more than 1/2 is sanded off leaving a very small glaze coat on the panel.

I sand this with the hog and inline sander to get its shape and cut it fast. I then go over it with some 80 grit.
These next pictures are on the edge of the opening and you can see how thin this coat is.

If you have any remaining low spots I like to use a glaze to fill any imperfections. I like to go over 80 grit. the 36 is a little to coarse. After that I will go over the panel with some 120 grit to 180 and its ready for primer.

Some tools of the trade the round tool is the bondo hog and the other two are some long boards for a final hand sanding.

Mitch is done so I guess I will take over the thread now.
A lil progress. Mitch put it in primer and I got it home last night I started blocking it so I can paint it because its been beautiful lately
I hit the engine compartment with a coat of self etching primer
Ill put a few more then I will use a flat or satin clear unless I dont use all my paint on the body
and I traded my front seat for another one
I will try to get some shit done soon

Fucker is a PERFECT fit the only things I had to modify were the half moon key (It was a lil too wide) And pulled off the turn signal return flap (thing) After that it slid right on and is tight

Hit it with a scotch brite pad because it was too shiny and you can see the cargo doors dont match too great but the OG paint hatch does so I may buy a few more cans and spray all the doors the nose looks OG still I think I will put some vaseline on the rust spots on the driver door so the paint doesnt stick

Polish & wax the rest of the bus, it might match a bit better afterwards.

I was thinking the same thing. the finish being the same will lessen the visible differences between the various panels.

You can see on the first cargo door I polished it a lil hoping the paint would match better but then realized that it had meen reprayed (all but the nose) and the respray is a lil lighter
I am going to try to take it down to the OG paint on the doors but if it doesnt work I will just paint it
And later I will mix it and pray it with "real" paint

I know I still need to notch the holes for the taillights but I can do that without damaging the paint
Just waiting to get the lights first

Bus is looking great. Very nice work. I would not hesitate to have you work on my bus, Mitch (except that it's done).

I've learned so much from threads like this that I would not hesitate to do the finish bodywork on my oval. It has been sitting...
