I've read some posts on the wavy washers on the rocker shafts wearing out. I'm assuming this will let the rockers slide around and mess with the valve tips? I'm trying to get educated on heads and valve train for the future so I put together a reliable stock engine for my daily driver. Any suggestions on what to look for and what to replace or rebuild on the rockers and shafts is appreciated. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle |

Hello
I added valve lash caps on the top of the valves..in my opinion this save the valve top and gives a larger point of contact. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

You can pretty much just check the shaft for wear by looking at it and feeling for a ridge, and assuming it checks out OK you are good to go, as the rockers should then be fine too. Of course miking these would be the preferred and proper method, but in general there is little wear to worry about. The adjuster should not be worn flat or otherwise buggered. Where the pushrod sits will likely show a little wear, but it should be even, if there is a ledge find another. As long as you are staying stock on the springs there is really no need to go with HD rocker shafts, though they are not very expensive, but you can still pick up a shim kit to replace the wavy washers, which are nice to get rid of. Swivel feet are nice too. The ones I ran required machining on the rockers, I don't know if others do or not- ask. Ideally you would have the same rocker back in the same position on the same shaft, so try to keep track of them. |
