flipping through the new issue today and saw a
custom stainless steel roof rack on the 'island
pearl' feature car...not sure if the owner is
protecting his sources or not--but the article
doesn't give any brand names and indicates
that he bought it out of the back of van at a
cruise night...
what the heck?! this is hardly the kind of stuff
that shows up at most swap meets and it sure
doesn't look like a one-off that was slapped
together by a do-it-yourselfer in the garage
on a saturday afternoon with some tubing and
a welder...
anybody got a clue what it is? although it looks
VERY similar, i'm pretty sure it is not an airstreme...
i NEED this roof rack...thanks much...

Was it Kevin's car? I know his car is suppose to be in hot VWs. We don't have the latest hot VW's here yet. I have seen those racks at the last VW Classic when I went. Some guy from Singapore or Thailand not real sure, anyways he had a few of them for sale. If I remember those racks were like $500 plus. Who knows maybe he will be back again for this years classic.

Our Airstreme racks are identical to the OG racks made in the 50s, well they are actually better made to be honest, all aluminium and stainless.
They are exact copies and are made up from different parts, using 4 aluminium cast pieces that forms the teardrop shape.
Take a good look at the picture above and you will see on these racks the teardrop shape is lost at the front.
We have og racks which we used as templates for our version. The og racks were sold under many names throughout Europe.
These other ones are basic copies and don´t have the luggage supports, the maker contacted us and tried to deal with us about 2 years ago prior to going making his own.
We are a small operation in Spain and due to exchange rates our racks were VERY expensive.........but saying that they were all made and each one was tested on a car to get the perfect fit prior to shipping.
We have stopped production now..............but they will be available everywhere this year and at a much better price......we have been taken over/bought out by someone who produces top quality products and has a very good distribution network in place.More of that later.
I have seen these racks close up and when you get a good look at the profile you will see what I am talking about. Airstreme racks are accurate copies and these are simply a "new" style rack. |

I just met a guy last week at a local socal V W cruise night who had one on his ghia. He has the bug ones too. The price was $400 and it was out of the back of a ghia not a van. Just kidding. I am going to probably see him tomorrow. If u are serious I can arrange to get his phone number. |
