Hi,I bought a 73 Thing 2 days ago and someone had converted to an alternator but it was'nt charging.I did a search but everything I find says there should be 3 thick red and white wires going to the voltage regulator. My regulator has already been removed and I only have 2 thick red and white wires. Is this normal or am I missing something? Please help!

What I meant to say was the conversion instructions say to remove the 3 thick red wires from the regulator and splice them all together and hook them to the new alternator, but I only have 2 thick red wires.I dont have an external regulator anymore.Should there be 2 wires or 3?I dont want to buy another alternator if there is a wire missing.

Mine only has 2 wires one at the top of the voltage reg and one at the bottom so those two wires would go together

If you can get the closeup of the regulator that would be great.

Early alternators used external regulators.

Most conversion kits use AL-82 Bosch alternators which are internal regulator.

Wiring on these is easy. At the alternator, connect the large wire to the large terminal. Connect the small brown wire to the ground screw as it was connected on the generator. Connect the blue or green wire to the male spade terminal on the alternator.

At the voltage regulator, connect all the large wires together either with their screw terminals or with a large male-male spade adapter. There will be two or three depending upon the vehicle. Leave the brown wire connected to its ground if it is present. Connect the blue and green wires together at the regulator with a male-male spade adapter.

Insulate all the connections well. The large wires are always hot and unfused! Wrapping them with electrical tape is inadequate. Put plastic tubing or wire loom material around the connectors and then tape it securely.
