65 Bug - swing tranny. Just replaced both rear wheel bearings - pulled both sides at one time - reinstalled. Now with car in gear, the rear wheels just spin by hand. Doesnt matter what gear its in. If I rotate one drum, the other side turns with it. It;s like the two axles and connected to each other, but neither is connected to the transmission.

I started the car and the wheels rotate some - but once again, they are not realy engaged. The axle protrudes about 1/8 past the axle nut.

What could I have screwed up? Thanks!

Have you put the car on the ground and tried to move it yet ? If you didnt touch the trans at all I dont see how it could have changed it. Mines on jack stands right now I can go out side and try the same thing you did and see if it does the same thing or test yours on the ground and see if it works correctly...

The car is still on stands - Started it put it in first and I can stop the wheel by hand while the engine is running and in gear.
While I was putting in the bearings, the axles slid in and out a bit (which should be normal) - Is there something that I may have broke when I initiall tapped the bearings on (used the hub and a spacer to crank it down the rest of the way)

I am half sick over this - any insight would be great.

I think this is normal behavior for the differential. With both off the ground, they will spin in opposite directions if you turn one. Only one may turn if you are in gear with the engine running.

This is normal. When both wheels ae in the air and the trans in gear, the ring gear on the differential won't turn. When you turn one wheel by hand, that side gear turns the spider gears which turn the opposite side gear in the other direction. If you put one wheel on the ground with the trans in gear, you won't be able to turn the wheel that is in the air. Hope this made sense.

WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, I feel like such a dumbass. I panicked when I was putting on the axle nuts before I dropped the car and it just spun. Must have been the two days of kerosene, brake cleaner, paint fumes and exhaust while laying and sitting on a cement floor LOL.

I went down and got my poor daughter out of bed (home sick from school) to test it - She held one drum and mine spun with the engine. Now she can go back to bed and I can get back to the front wheel bearings and brakes. Thanks all - you made my day

Haha, I think we've all been there at some point or another.

I remember after pulling my newly rebuilt engine in, I left the car in neutral and cranked it with the wheels up. One wheel was rotating in one direction, the other on was rotating in the opposite. My jaw must have hit the floor because the guy that was helping me with the job just chuckled and told me not to worry, that's perfectly normal!

And all last night I am running through "Well, I have to drop the engine - so while its out might as well do the rear seal and then since i am doing the 12V. might as well upgrade the flywheel.....and since I have to pull the transaxle, should I just put a new one in........and on and on.

Well, the nice thing is I made some progress on other fronts today - new front wheel bearings, brakes, wheel cylinders, tie rod ends, pulled and painted the gas tank...... Ya know I should know better "yeah in about a week and I should be done" LOL and I havent even ordered the interior yet...
