I just put a progressive in my bug. I got it used, then I tore it down and cleaned everything really thoroughly. Also, I set the float. It has the empi intake I believe. Heat risers are hooked up.

My engine is a 1641, mild cam, non merged header, 009 with pertronix, stock heads, stock crank and rods.

I set my timing at 10 degrees at 1000 rpms. It goes to about 30 when the rpms go up, so i think its about right.

I set up the carb with the mixture screw 2 turns out, speed screw 1 1/2 turns out. It easily fired up. I tuned it to get the lean best idle setting. I'm idling about 1000 rpms after its warmed up. I took the choke plates out cause I don't need the choke and didn't want to worry about it shorting out. It fires up easily without the choke.

When running, it will backfire sometimes if i rev it and close the throttle. sometimes it will bog a little if I floor it, and then make power.
It actually backfires quite often.
It really runs better than I expected, since I read about everyone saying that these carbs suck.
I have the jet sizes i'm using written down, I'll post them when I go back home, since I left them with the bug.

If anyone is running a similar setup, I'd like to hear what jetting combo you're using and if it works well.
Also, if you have any other advice to tune the carb, let me know. It runs pretty good now, but i'm sure it can be better.

Thanks in advance.

First make sure the exhaust is one tightly, then check for leeks at the manifold.
Then adjust your valves, set your points, then set your timing. Set the timing based on your distributor. Now that everything else is taken care of, you can work on your carburetor.
Read about carburetor adjustment here

I had a very hard time with a progressive and so I got rid of it.

thanks,
I just put my exhaust on with new gaskets, timing is 10 degrees initial, about 30 full advanced with an 009.
just adjusted valves...

it runs good, i just have a little hesitation when i mash the gas. it stumbles sometimes. not quite as driveable as a stock carb. i don't expect it to be perfect, but if anyone has advice for getting rid of the stumble and making it a little smoother on the low end at part throttle that would be nice.

I had a 009 that hesitated at low RPMs and so I changed it to a vacuum advanced and now I don't have that. does your carb have a vacuum port? If it does, get a vacuum advanced distributor.
