I see metal-dash Bay Windows for sale in Europe once in a while. What is the deal? What do they look like? Can I convert my '71 to look like that? Also, the area behind the front seats...can I just take off the black plastic material so that it looks clean and factory intended? |

You dont want to take the black padded stuff off. There are a lot of extra holes in the metal under there.

If I am correct the holes on the corner are only on the late bays. However, I do believe the holes in the lower section of the dash are in all models. There are a ton of threads on here if you use the search.
If you can live with the holes on the corners, or can weld them closed, there are a couple options I can think of for filling the other holes. You could possibly makes plates out of steel that fit right in the section over all of the holes, and drill the holes out for the ones you need. Or With as many modern features as most people are putting into their busses, you could easily fill the holes with switches and buttons. _________________ Otto Bus - 1978 Daily Driver

I have never before seen any 1968~79 VW Type 2 dashboards, with vertical slots close to the outboard "corners"! Perhaps it is only a feature of padded dashboards (concealed behind the padding), which were not available for right-hand drive vehicles and a relative rarity for European specification vehicles. _________________ Regards.

the guage pod is plastic and so is the upper pad so i think it looks better with the padded face. it's not a split. _________________ once you realize im not impressed we will get along just fine |

| It may have blended better painted black. I'm planning on doing this to my 68 sc unless someone can tell me the secret to restoring a padded dash with many many cracks. Euro dashes had the padded top part with the handle didn't they? I wonder if speakers would work nicely behind the corners of the dash (near the door) or if the sound would be distorted excessively. |

I'm no big fan of plastic. Even leaving the inserts kind of defeats the purpose. I think if I wanted to go for this kind of look, I'd look for custom fiberglass dashes, or fabricate one in metal/glass from scratch, and plant a PIMPED OUT gauge and radio/gps/dvd player set up in it, ala custom hot rod. Now THAT could look extremely cool, and would quickly knock yer teeth out in a hard stop. _________________ 1984 CABRIOLET 6spd, quaife diff, Neuspeed springs, sway bars, tie bar, short shift kit, bilstein shocks, 16X7 RSE 3pc wheels, BFG TA 205 40s

VW Heritage also show VDO Cockpit accessory gauges on this page, but it's strange to see Imperial calibrated (e.g. PSI and ºF, instead of Bar and ºC) instruments on VDO gauges for the British market! _________________ Regards.

Clicking on this link, merely results in the following "Information" message:
No photos met your search criteria
That's quite a fresh-looking pre-1973 VW 16/1700 Type 2 dashboard, but why position those three switches so far away, just below the glove-box aperture, when you appear to have a few vacant positions on the driver's side?
What is the large black box, just below the steering-column support bracket, close to where the fuse & relay box would be?
I have two six-position, relay mounting cum connector blocks (dimensions 110 mm x 75 mm x 25 mm), suspended unobtrusively, using home-made aluminium adapter brackets, beneath the steering-column support bracket, of my British specification, 1973 VW Type 2, to make provision for, an additional twelve accessory relays, as shown removed from the vehicle for illustration purposes, in the following pictures:

Not my dash board so I have no answer, sorry. I found this picture on the www after I bought my 73 orange westy and I liked the euro dash look. Hmmm...maybe someday I will change it. _________________ 1979 Type-2 Westfalia “Sandy”

I asked this same question a few years back about metal dashes. I took a nasty one out of my first bus and stripped it down. I never sanded and painted it but it definitely can be done and then put the upper dash pad back on. I think they look awesome painted the same color as the bus.
Added this from my gallery...

Some day when good used dashes are available someone will say - It would have brought an extra $10,000 at the auction with the stock dash but some PO hacked it. Too bad.
1971 STOCK Westy top retail now is valued at $27,400 by NADA. A 1963 STOCK 23-window Split just sold at auction for $217,800. If you want to know what that dash will feel like in say 10 years, roll down the window and toss out a whole bunch of 20's today. That should be a pretty good test how much you'll love it then. _________________
