A friend of mine came across 3 NOS generators. He said the were small diameter Porsche generators & were 12V. The ones were he could upgrade his 356 from 6V to 12V using the 6V generator stand.

When I got there to see them, they were in the VW box, wrapped in cardboard and wax paper.

VW part number is: 113.903.031
Bosch part number: Bosch 0-101-206-116 14V/38A

I could not find this number referenced on line at Bosch. Can anyone confirm the compatibility of this generator?

My question is to confirm or refute that this generator is a possible option for replacement of a small diameter 6V generator with a small diameter 12V generator. Can this be substituted in a 12V upgrade.

Here's some pics showing the markings and codes:

From what I remember, these can be used when changing over to 12v. You don't have to change out the gen stand. It can be used on those old 25 hp engines that can't change the gen stand, if need be.

the part number, on the part, is 113 903 031 E, which, according to my parts book is a generator, 12V, without regulator, 90mm diameter. so yes, you could use this on a 25hp, 36hp, 40hp (that had a 90mm generator pedestal). measure the diameter of the generator. if it is indeed 90mm, and not 105mm like the later style 12V, you should be good to go, as long as you get the correct 38A regulator.

Thank you.

I had the hardest time trying to look up the part number.

Which parts book did you use to reference the numbers?

I did a google search on 113 903 031 E and found this:

http://www.allzim.com/acatalog/Remanufactured_Generator__356_912_12V.htm

they even have other interchange numbers. $309.95 REMANUFACTURED Shocked with a $325.00 core deposit. That's one valuable item you have there.

Interesting, all my Type 2 bus Generators are 38A, and they are longer than the standard 30A Bug units, it seems that it would be hard to put 38A in a smaller diameter than standard case if they had to lengthen the 30A to get the 38A?

Part numbers comes up at Bus depot for 113903031

Generator
New, Bosch
Part Reference Number*: 113903031PX $172.81
Brand: Bosch/Germany*

Dynamo
Part Reference Number*: 113903031E $1,022.27
Brand: Volkswagen/Germany*

Do you think they could be OEM VW bus generators, I bet if you e-mail www.busdepot.com they will tell you the difference :0)

This quote from CIP1 ad... Also reflected in many other ad's...

"This is the new style SOLID STATE voltage regulator (Part # 919004009) which replaces the old style box regulator.
Will work with both the 30 or 38 amp Generators."

I used one of those electronic regulators on a 38 amp 12V gen, on my bus, for years, was very happy with it and highly recommend them: the overall voltage of the system went up, better lighting, faster starter, faster turn signal relay, happier battery, etc...

Finally, an actual improved product!

I have a few NOS 38 amp regulators for sale. Send me a PM if you want one.
But yes, you can use a 30a regulator with a 38a gen. You cannot use a 38a regulator with a 30a generator.
