|
|
| I have a newly purchase project car: 1966 Ghia. It has lots of required body work and obvious hiding places....especially for BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS. I'm looking for suggestions on how to fumigate this car "Completely" to rid it of all the SPIDERS. I have washed, cleaned & vaccumed, the inside and out pretty good, but still they appear. I was wondering if the car can be covered (sealed) and bug bombed.....or something like this. Its currently not on the road. It can run and there is a little bit gas in the tank but I have since removed the battery while I work on the engine compartment. I want to use extreme care and caution. Any Suggestions??? |

I've dealt with this many times! My favorite technique is to park the car in a small garage, cover the car with a large tarpaulin, and release 2-3 bug bombs beneath it. 24 hours later, check for victims. It has not proven 100% effective, though. Sometimes there are survivors!
Bear in mind that this type of spider is nocturnal and really prefers to keep to itself. It won't jump out and attack you, if that's what you're worried about. But if you get the creeps just thinking about them, invest in some heavy leather gloves, steel your courage with a strong beverage or motivational self-help tapes, and get in there and show them who's the boss. _________________ David Ruby

| Blackwidows also like dark damp areas. They are difficult to get rid of, and lots of the poisons do nothing to them. |

Here's my method: Park the car. Wait a few days. Look for the black widow webs trailing from the VW to the driveway. Use a stick to gently shake the web - the spider will spring out to eat it's prey - then BAM hit 'em with some spider killer. It takes a few days of here and there spider hunting... but you'll get 'em. _________________ **SUPPORT THE SAMBA**

Guess that's why I don't have to deal with many of them, just a couple per barn find, but this is a real fun post!
What about tarping the car, starting it and letting the exahust gasses do the trick. Hey, it works for people! |

I know its fairly usual for you guy's over there, but when I bought my first Ghia into the UK we found a feckin huge female blackwidow living under the carpet in the front quarters- oh, that was after 6 months in a UK winter with temps averaging 3 degree C.
Following this I became quite an expert on the subject!! I stripped it out and bug bombed the inside, then had the rest of the car sprayed with an insectiside- then left it for about 3 months before going anywhere near it!!
This seemed to do the trick! Good luck!!
I was a massive arachnabobe before with UK spiders- They aren't quite so scary for me anymore!! _________________ http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZsethnsuzie

I recently had one set up shop in the engine bay on my 52 Chrysler project. She bolted when I got the stick close so I left the hood open over night. The extra light made her stay hidden under the intake manifold. I couldn't even see her under there, or if she had an egg sack hidden. The next day I dropped a moth in the middle of the web. It drew her out and distracted her long enough for me to break the web going back to the intake. Easy to fish her out with the stick then as she had nowhere to retreat to. Luckily no babies showed up so she didn't have an egg sack. If you have gotten rid of several of them maybe yours already had a litter. How big were they? _________________ 2000 Golf TDi

It seems as though every car I have worked on, here in northern California, has had at least one or two juicy black widows living in a quiet, dark corner of the engine bay, dashboard, or suspension. Especially the old cars I have drug out of fields, or barns, or from under trees. Even city-kept cars.
Right now, I am working on putting together my new rallye car, a 1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR4. It sat in a field for four years prior to me getting it, and collected quite a few inhabitants! Worst part: the car is black. The engine bay is literally a black hole, and I have had to fish my hands and arms down where the turbo is hidden, and in other dark and creepy nooks and crannies throughout. Wearing leather gloves helps - one just squishes whatever one comes up against, arachnid-wise. I waged chemical warfare on the spiders on the first night the car was in my workshop, and three big spiders died then. But I have since killed another three. _________________ David Ruby

I thank all of you for providing suggestions, confiming some of my thoughts, and offering a few chuckles.
I definitely think I will do the tarp cover and bomb (maybe not with 2-3 bombs, but one good one).
Last night I pulled the seats, and saw a little rust, so decided to rip ALL the carpet out....and yes! I found those widow eggs in the front and back panels under the carpet. Ohhh, and I do have a Black Ghia. Luckily (I think) all the eggs were empty.
I wont be chasing with sticks, but I will load up on a strong beverage before and during my work, to ease the SHOCK effect, should anymore pop out. ""I just have to make sure they don't make eye contact with me should I be unable to kill them, they get away, and then come back looking for me".

how tight would it be to make a custom ghia...
the black widow.
all black with blood red accents.
*drools*
anyways, i live in cali too, those biaotches are everywhere.
but yah, they dont "attack" or chase you. only if your in there little spot.
i would rip the panels, close the windows, and pop a bomb. wait a day, pop another. _________________ AKA Chris™

I think the hot rod thing has passed now that hot wheels have released a scalloped Ghia!
I still love the look, but subtlety is the key to timelesness!
I did this a while before I got the lowlight- Definitely won't be going that route with this one! |
