I saw a VW add on Youtube with the beetle winking its headlight.- sort of Herbie style
I thought that would be quite cool on my bus. Any ideas on how that is done? |

Well you could just hook up two switches that cut power to the headlights. When you flip a switch it could turn off the headlight. If something went wrong with the circuit you would seriously hamper your night driving abilities. Doesn't sound worth it.
How about just some eyelids instead. Looks much better

Is the purpose of the eyelid to shield oncoming drivers or esthetic in nature? _________________ Add life to your years, instead of years to your life. |

No, this winking involved a shield/curved flap coming over the lens - eyelid style and returning.I guess it would involve a curved opening above the lens which would let dirt through -even if you put a close seal around the cutout |

Yes, I'm aware of the winking. However, I was interested in the eyelids specifically because I saw a bus locally last week with them and have since since other topics posted here on the same. Sorry for hijacking your post. _________________ Add life to your years, instead of years to your life. |

Yep, just found them among the parts the PO left me.
I'm putting them on in an hour.
How do you remove the metal rim around the headlights?
Well, I mean is there any way aside from the obvious?
And I think they are for form and maybe function?

I say form. They don't seem to serve a purpose except for looks. My wife's bus isn't even on the road and she wanted eyebrows . Personally, I like these...

Oh, hey, I took the parts out there to put them on my bus, and for the life of me just couldn't get them on. I was out there for 30 minutes with a screwdriver and a knife trying to pop them into place. _________________ 1973 Bay Window - Maggie the Magical Mystery Bus

Not judging here - but is there a particular reason that you want them on? Is it because they were on previously, or that you like the look, or other? I must admit that when I saw them last week at a car show, they caught my eye. But what are your thoughts? _________________ Add life to your years, instead of years to your life. |

They go under the ring that holds the headlight into the bucket. You have to take the chrome trim ring off then unscrew the metal ring holding the headlight in and slip it in between the bulb and the ring. Tighten everything back up,put the trim ring back on and you're done.
Personally, I like the way they look. _________________ Check out my Westy resto. thread.

It would be cool to have an actual eyelid that winked. That invention would sell I think... |

bling?
I've never understood it either. People put them on bugs to make them more like bugs... but insects don't have eyelids. Whatever. |

Pure aesthetics i think isnt it? I had them on an old bug, but not sure about them on buses. Like somone else said as well, they never quite fit right, unless that was just me?

Wonder if anyone makes one but like a peace sign. That would be cool. But I bet it would mess up the way the light shines. Does anybody know if they make these? Kinda like the cat eye. I may have to try to make some.. _________________ Looking for SO34 parts.

nobody thinks a real blinking headlight wouldn't be cool??? It would have to work like an intermittent windshield wiper works... to get the real blinking effect... |

Are these one you talk about actuated by a solenoid?
Do they have a pushbutton that allows it to return to normal affter its released?
I can see the idea of a wiper motor mounted sideways with a membrane/shield that follows the shape an returns after one pulsebut I've seen no such idea "downunder" put into use |
