Ok I am in the middle of a 66 custom restoration. We are not putting in all of the original interior, just the seats, floor, a custom head liner, and panels. I am removing all of the clips that hold the other stuff on but am kind of stuck because I dont know if I should remove these on the side of the B pillar.

These hold the side interior and also a seal that hits the door. Should I remove them?

This is what I want but can't tell what they did by the door.

I am not sure but I believe those clips help hold on the fabric for the headliner. If they hold a seal that hits the door I would keep them anyway.

The "seal" is usually called a "windlace" and I think is held by that clip. It's been too long for me, though, so I defer to someone who's done this recently.

yes these are attached to the pillar and yes these hold the fabric and seal. I need to know if the seal is needed or is just an there for looks.

I *think* that seal is just there as a nice, finished edge to the headliner. The door rubber should provide all the necessary sealing. Standards came without that headliner rubber piece, so I would imagine it is primarily cosmetic. Don't hold me to it, though. Razz

That is what I was thinking. Now I have to figure out how to make that look nice without having any of the fabric rapped around it. Two pieces of metal come together here all of the way up and with it all exposed there will be a kind of ugly lip there. Maybe I will cut the lip off and weld it all together and sand it down to get a nice smooth corner.

The windlace stops some airflow from an imperfect door seal, and results in less noise also. It's not just cosmetic.

But the windlace is on the inside and only on the back side of the door. With good door seals there shouldn't be a problem with wind noise. Also even if there is some wind noise I think that the sound of the engine wouls most likely drown it out. Does this seem correct?

I've noticed a difference in sound level when it is pulled away from the door on some cars. Not all door seals are perfect, especially as they age. Modern cars have two layers of door seals for this reason. This is all VW had. You can always leave them out and just turn the radio up louder! Wink

My guess is thats a standard and never had headliner material or the wind lace installed, so it came through without the clips.

Well the discription to the pic says a 54 canadian. I dont know anything about that early of a beetle so I guess it is possible that they didnt come with them. I am pretty sure I am going to cut the clips and press weld lip off and weld the two panels together and sand it down so it is a nice smooth corner. thanks

It's probabaly a Canadian Standard... sold only in Canada and pretty much a Standard with some exterior chrome and trim, so the partial headliner would be right.

Keep us posted with pics of this project, it's something a lot of people talk about doing but I've never seen it.

Okay ill keep it posted. Right now I am doing the channels, wheel wells, pretty much the lower 6 inches of the car. This car was either save NOW or just trash it so we opted to put some cash in and save another bug.
