|
|
Hi Folks,
I borrowed a universal engine stand from a buddy of mine in order to tear down my engine. It's one of those stands with the extensions that are tightened down in a specific pattern to mount to any engine - hence the universal part I guess. Anyway I read in my how-to-take-a-vw-engine-apart book that you should only bolt the left side so you can split the case when the time comes. When they say left do they mean the side that does not have the nut that is pressed into the case? Thanks! |

First you will need to remove the flywheel to mount it.
Use all 4 bolts since they do not have enough support for a complete engine and can break the "ears" off the case. Strip it down to a short block and then unbolt the two on the #1 / #2 side so you can split the case. _________________ Glenn

Yeah, I already stripped it down almost to the block. Fly wheel, Fan shroud, intake manifold, muffler, distributor, sheet metal - all gone. I'm down to removing the heat exchangers which I wanted to wait until it was in the air.
Any idea what type of bolts to use? Can the top two that have the nuts on pressed in (one one side) and the only nut you can get at from the engine compartment be taken out of the tranny? I didn't try taking them out after the engine came out.
Wow, remove the bolts off of the #1, #2 cylinder side, huh? okdoke - that's what I needed to know - thanks! |

Ok, the universal stand doesn't work as-is and because I'm borrowing it from a friend I can't modify it. What is the diameter of the VW bench versions mounting cylinder? I'm wondering if I could buy the VW bench mount version and stick in my universal engine stands dolly. Sound plausible? Thanks! |

My setup looks exactly like Glenn's. I tried the universal setup but it was too sketchy. I'm borrowing the stand from my father-in-law and he probably wouldn't care if I modified it but with the adapter no modifications were required. |

Ok, I just got the above listed adapter that Glenn has. According to the directions it looks like they want it mounted to the bottom and top mounting bolts on the distributor side. How do you handle the botton bolt? I didn't look to closely at the case yet - is that bolt a permanent fixature? |

Just wanted to clarify that both the stands shown are made by me. The photo of the yoke in the red stand is the older version, all now have the gussets. Just haven't found time to take new photos. |

Hi,
What`s the reason for reinforcing them? Did the old design brake/crack? Wondering since I have one of them.
Great quality part! |

Use some oversize nuts or length of steel sleeve to create a space to keep nut on threads of engine case stud...... Do not remove stud unless necessary to save wear on case threads...
