so i have first, second and third. shifting into fourth goes in but i lose power in fourth with a cruising speed of 51. no good. i can cruise to work at 50 in third but when i shift, i decrease speed. no e brake drag, everything else motorwise is good. i have 185/65 in the rear tuckin like a mofo. i drive an inch of the ground. really. i eat road reflectors. could an axle bearing cause this. i have a 1300 sp with a stock trans. and i really have to drive my bug. i'm about ready to pull my sqback motor to throw in it. i have a tahoe to drive but it collects dust cause i love driving my bugs...anyone have any clue?????? thanks

It couldn't be wheel bearings. They don't need oil or lubrication anyway. There are a thousand people here that think so anyway. Oil doesn't run up hill.....what do you think?? I can see plenty of issues that might contribute to your 'issue'. I think you already have an idea. Rolling Eyes That e-brake cable looks a bit snug dewd......

Not to mention that you are well below the California vehicle code limit for ground clearance. It is illegal to be so low that any portion of the car would rub the ground should you shed a tire. This is for safety reasons. If you get a flat, hell if you are low on air in a front tire, you lose all directional control of the car. This is brainlessly lowered. Might be best if you don't drive in 4th gear with this setup.

First would be even better for you.

It is truly the dumbest damn thing I've seen in a long time. But hey.....we're concerned about 4th gear here, Not safety. Shocked

If I had a slammed bug this low (well, I wouldn't, I hate how they handle, and one THAT low I'd never even consider) and with that much of an angle on the axles I think I'd at least go and pack some good moly grease into the wheel bearings...

You sure that it is a 1300 in there? It looks like a stale-air 40HP (1200) heater box in that picture. STill, even a 40HP should be able to go faster than 51 in 4th gear. They were rated (with stock tire height) up to 72MPH.

If its pulling fine through the other 3 gears and looses power in fourth, my guess is the tranny has had enough.

Have you checked the oil level in the tranny?

Keep in mind that you have EVERYTHING way out of the design parameters. Things CAN NOT work properly like this. Not only do you have no lubrication going to the wheel bearings, but you also have too much angle at the fulcrum plates.

This causes wear at the fulcrums. That puts metal into the lubricating oil in the trans. That metal is going through all the sychros, bearings, gearsand other moving parts and is causing more wear, putting more metal into the gear oil.

Do you think this could be a problem?

Dude, you need to do a tranny raise! You can't jack things this far out of thier intended design areas and expect them to work.

Is this transportation or art work? If it is art work, park it and stare at it. Admire what you have done. But if this is transportation, you need to correct a few things, or else be able to accept that this package can not perform without constant replacment of expensive parts.

I don't know how you are staying out of the watchful eye of law enforcment, but I must agree with some others here. You have gone too far!

I agree, no F'n way this thing would hit any where close to 51 with this kind of drop and those pans (and more) in the condition shown.

Im not sayin i dont like em low... I run 6 in beam and drop spindles and im low out back.. But this guys shit is aird out in the pics It has to be. you would put driver weight plus gas and try to drive you would just sit and wheels would spin, its sittin on the ground.. Like i said looks cool. But kinda defeats the purpose of askin why he cant go 55mph. And as stated the e break cable looks really tight.. Plus to add there is no way this car moved any distance in this stance the pan, framhorns and jack mount would show highly visible signs of road rash and they dont.. That is why i called bs. But aird up and rollin i would suspect the tranny need attention not your motor

I'm no expert but if you are able to drive through all the other gears with no powerloss its def your tranny, your engine dont know what gear your in, so id guess you got some worn out shit in the tranny.
