VW basically had two ways of doing it - either a large relay with a fairly simple dash switch that would connect all 4 lights together and to a flasher relay, or by a more complicated dash switch and a basic flasher relay that would do it. On an oval with the tail-lights set up like the Bus was, you could go with the setup they used on Busses. Is yours 6V or 12V?

I'd like to hook mine as follows:

"a more complicated dash switch and a basic flasher relay that would do it."

Any wiring diagrams out there or what parts are needed? links to the part would be helpful.

I was waiting to find out if he was wanting to do it 6V or 12V before I posted parts links and diagrams. (when I first replied, I was also out of town in a motel room and didn't feel like digging that info up at that time as well)

Well, I have a 12v setup....what parts do you suggest if I were to use a push button switch and a 4 way flasher?

Okay, sorry it took me a while to answer this. Had to draw up a diagram and get some links for parts and such.

What switch and relay is being used on the one that won't work?

What you need is the late 1968-1972 Bus emergency flasher switch. and wire it up like the Bus was late 1968 through 1971. There's a diagram of how this needs to be connected shown below. That's emergency flasher switch part number 211953235A, which looks like this - I couldn't find a good pic online or in the Gallery so I "borrowed' this from an ad in the Classifieds:

Used switches often fall apart with age - but can be successfully zip-tied to hold them together again. Kind of a kluge, but it works. You can search for a 68-72 switch in the Classifieds, like I did to find that photo above.

Here's some links to new parts for this:

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D211%2D953%2D235%2DA

I see that CIP1 also sells the knob:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C24%2D111%2D953%2D245%2D1

and escutcheon mounting nut:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D111%2D941%2D515%2DD
http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=111941515D

and the red insert for the knob:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C16%2D113%2D544
http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=211953255C

You can use either the 4-terminal relay or the more common 3-terminal Euro-spec 12V flasher relay. That's the one with terminals 49, 49a and 31. Available at many auto parts stores (Tridon EP-35) or at most VW online sellers. VW Part number 111953227D or 191953227A.

Okay - I just drew up a diagram of how this needs to be wired to work properly. You'll need to hook up your brake light switch wire as shown, first to the e-flasher switch, then over to the turn signal switch. It's a fairly large image, so click on it to enlarge.

Hope that helps!

If it's 12 volt thats gonna be a N0177512, same bulb as in late model Golf/Jetta heater and A/C control panels, among other things. So most dealers should have it.

putting 4 way flashers in a oval is a stupid idea. you're going to drill your dash and put a out of place looking switch that will just decline the value of your oval. no one is going to notice if you have them on unless you put superbeetle lights. don't waste your time with that modern safety crap.

I asked the question if anybody had wired up 4 way flashers because
I all ready had a hole in my dash for a choke. I have installed a 1600 dual port motor and it has a electric choke . as for value of my car or any safety crap that you might not notice your imput was a waste of time. The short of it, I am tring to fill a hole in the dash not cut another one and I have some extra parts from a 67, and one of the switches is a 4 way flasher switch.
