Alright first post here....

Here is my new ride. Its a 1977 Beetle that has been converted to diesel with a 2 cylinder Lombardini air-cooled diesel engine. This engine is usually used in small tractors and generators. It has 23 horsepower and is slow and loud. I run waste veggie oil in my MBZ 300TD and bought this to run WVO as well. I've had 3 split windows and a Ghia but this is my first bug. It's a pretty clean restore and conversion and fun to drive (as long as there is no big hills... slow). This was built by some guy out here in the Bay area and it's currently running on Biodiesel but soon I hope to be running on veggie oil. I'm enjoying it's uniqueness.

23 horsepower!

I wonder what would win in a race, this or a 25hp barndoor.

Very intriguing. How is the engine coupled to the transaxle, with a special driveshaft? Modified VW clutch? Adapter plate? Are there pictures of the installation work in progress? Anyone who takes this and puts it in the homemade you-know-whats thread is an ass.

This uses the stock clutch with a custom fabbed flywheel and bell housing adapter. I got all the hand-drawn blueprints and build plans along with the car but not really any in-progress pics.

I think the barn door might whip me...

Very nice... I like it a lot Smile

I have a couple of questions:
what is the top speed you had with it ?
and what MPG does it get on vegetable oil ?

I love that car, nice color, and good to see a late model bug in both stock and good condition. That's rare. BUT : 23hp Shocked . If you only use it around town, why not jump to an electric conversion, instead of that lil' diesel ? At least, it would be silent, and cleaner than a diesel, even with 50% of WVO. No ?

Better range, and you don't have to lug around a butt-load of batteries. And you can refuel anywhere they've got diesel (which here in Finland and most of Europe is EVERY petrol-station). Or a deep-fryer and a strainer for that matter.... Smile

Personally I don't see the point with electric battery-powered cars. If we're talking hydrogen fuel cell, then that's the future, but sadly not available anywhere else than in California.

Cool car anyhow, I've always liked the idea of veggie oil, but I can't run it since our winters get down to -30C some years... :/

I like it, and I was surprised that it didn't have a vw diesel in it when I clicked this thread. Cool car, for sure.

I'm betting his mother didn't break open her checkbook for this project.
