The front mounting brackets screw into the sidewall and the heat outlet that goes through a hole in the cabin supports the other end. It doesn't look like you are missing anything.

But does it work?

The fuel pickup tube is meant to have a piece of rubber hose on it. The steel tube does not reach all the way to the bottom. VW originally put a rubber hose about 5-6" long on it.

Here we go again with this model!

It has the gas return line so the hook up is not as simple as a T under the tank. There is another thread with a large debate on this that you should read.

The fuel return line needs to be connected at the top of the tank. I posted a pic on there of the original connection on top of the tank.

I think the best retro fit is to connect the feed line under the tank with a T and the return line into a fitting custom made onto the sender unit flange.

There are templates available to cut the holes.

so i saw some of the other pics and the pickup tube looks like its straight and mine has the curve in it like its going to get fuel from the top of the tank? is that why there is the rubber hose on the end? or does my unit need the pipe carefully straightened out?
why cant the piece thats supposed to be in the top of the tank just be fit where it should be from the factory? isnt that what die grinders are for? or am i not getting something? and the return line and pickup would not need the extra work of rerouting seeings how the return line is just an open hole. and they are already on one fitting instead of making multiple ones.

That looks like a VERY complete heater and is a great deal at only $75.

A couple of reasons most people ( me included) don't use the supplied fuel lines (any of them, including the pick-up) is that they are very old and will most likely leak. Check them VERY carefully before you just bolt them on.
You can drill a hole in the fuel tank, but you better know what you're doing. The factory installation manual suggest remving the tank, cleaning it with a solvent, drilling the hole, cleaning again and reinstalling. You could maybe have a radiator shop clean it for you. Grinding sparks + fuel vapor = BAD!
I'm running the T under the tank set-up. It works BUT, I do have to say that it takes a while to prime if the tank is low (less than a quarter tank). The more I use the heater and the more full I keep the tank keeps it working better and igniting faster. If I don't use it for a while and try to start it with a low fuel level it can take a while to prime. I think the stock pick-up location would minimize this.
Again, even if you use the stock pick-up, inspect ALL fuel lines carefully. Also, check the rubber grommet that seals the pick-up to the tank.

Lots of info here:

I have not been able to find templates. The manual I have (on CD) has some measurements you can use to triangulate the mounting points. Look on the classifieds here or on ebay for an Eberspacher manual on CD. Mine covers several models/cars.
