|
|
I'm trying to put the pedal assembly back on and I can't, for the life of me, figure out how it reassembles. I have the clutch & accelerator cable attached and I thought I had the spring positioned correctly but the pedals are limp & fall forward. Had the same problem 20 years ago on the first '67 and cannot remember what was done to fix it.
I saw a post on here but the assembly doesn't look like the one I have. We also have a '65 but its different from the '67 so I can't even reference.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for any info!

Disconnect the clutch cable from the transmission, to get some extra slack (maybe that's obvious, but I struggled with it MANY times before figuring out this little trick). Offer up the pedals, getting the brake rod positioned correctly:
Get one or both bolts started, then grab the brake pedal spring by the hook (you can just see it in the picture above)--I use a tool like this:
...and pull it in its place on the brake pedal rod pin. Then you can tighten the bolts up holding the pedals in place.

The pedal cluster is pretty much the same from late 1966 and newer cars. The clutch has no spring at all, it's tensioned via the spring on the clutch arm on the transmission. The brake pedal though, that does have a return spring, which also doubles as the pushrod retainer. In he following picture, you see the hook of the spring at the very bottom? Well after you connect the pushrod to the pedal, you pick that loop up and hook it on the groove in that same mounting stud. That alone will keep it all together, but there is a backup clip as shown that is installed after it's together:
After you have it on there, then you should adjust the pedal stop so that the pedals are even with each other and that the endplay in the brake pedal is a few millimeters:

Don't forget the trick of using a rubber band or bread wrapper twisty tie for keeping the clutch cable 'loop' on the pedal 'hook. |

Okay okay. So the clutch pedal will stay up via the tension of the cable, right? I think I got it.
Thankfully the body is off...would probably be even more frustrating with body-on.
I know, I know. You're thinking "how is the person going to put a body on a chassis when she doesn't even know how to install the pedal assembly?"
Yeah. I'm thinking the same thing. |

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!
The bolt that has that metal tab on it that keeps the clutch pedal from falling forward (toward REAR of car) was sheared off. What is that part called? _________________ '67 Beetle Sedan on '66 chassis (well, its ALMOST on the chassis!)

The term "falling forward" was a little confusing, I think you mean it's falling towards the rear of the car. That's what the pedal stop bracket does. The brake pedal spring and the clutch cable tension will pull the pedals to the rear, and the pedal stop is what sets the pedal height.
So anyway, you mean the bolt the secures the pedal stop bracket is broken off? That sucks. But at least accessing the other side of it is easy enough. In a pinch you could always just drill it out entirely and use a nut and bolt there. |

Back on that post from Glutamodo, I'm having difficulty figuring out where the brake return spring clips as well. Not the "hooked" end that fastens to the brake pedal, but the "L" end. Where the heck does this end go? There simply doesn't appear to be anywhere to fasten it. |

It does not fasten to anything.... it should just be against the floor pan with tension on it and hooked to the brake pedal in the correct spot with the hook end. |

I lknow it's the wrong year but you are missing the pedal stop... it keeps the clutch from falling towards the rear of the car.
