trying to determine the correct hubcaps for a 1977 bay. The ones available as OG have a 251 part number which is Vanagon. I've looked several places and researched threads here but have been unable to determine what cap I am looking for to look OG on this 1977. I have been told the 251 caps are fatter (stick out further) however one post said that that style started in the mid-70's. any hubcap experts here who can point me in the right direction? My 4 have too many dents to be rechromed. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

the thinner ones came on 71-72 busses, 73+ have the fatter ones. They both interchange. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Well Busdaddy is there any difference in finish on the inside of these two styles. Not to hijack your thread SG, but we were discussing it, and from what busdaddy just said then the caps on mine are not original. I'll still take some pics this evening and post them here. _________________ My Resto Thread

Some are stainless and some are chrome if that's what you mean, I'm not sure when that changed, could just be different suppliers. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I don't believe either set is stainless. It's flaking off the inside of the old ones, and the new ones are painted on the inside. Here's some pics of what I have. The first pic is a little misleading because I wasn't really level with the rims. I'd say it's about a 3/8" difference.
And here's what they look like with the new tires that were mounted on the wheels that I just had sand blasted and painted.

the ones on this 1977 are like the thinner ones on the left. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |
