Thought I would start a thread with all of the fuel injection resources that I've seen posted in the Late Model/Super forum lately. Add your resources to help build a one-stop shop for Fuel Injection info.

Here are the resources I used that I found helpful in understanding how the L-Jetronic fuel injection works.

Manuals
www.type2.com/bartnik/tech1.htm
http://itinerant-air-cooled.com/viewtopic.php?t=54...highlight=
http://bama.ua.edu/~darren/boschindex.html

Parts resources: I didn't buy everything here but these were identified as places to get the odd hard to find items. I'm sure there are others and it's not an endorsement of these vendors.

Electrical connectors on your FI harness consult this thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=227137&highlight=
Fuel injector connector: http://www.rs-autosport.net/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=3_50&products_id=189
New auxiliary air valve: http://www.fuelinjectioncorp.com/search/
Double relay: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=071906059
http://www2.cip1.com/
http://www.bughaus.com/Beetle_Fuel_Injection_Parts.htm
Cleaning/rebuilding the injectors:
http://www.cruzinperformance.com or
http://www.witchhunter.com/

Air hoses: I had a bugger of a time finding braided air hoses so eventually just used fuel line which should work just fine. Only NAPA had the sizes I needed locally.

If you don't know how to use a multi-meter just google "how to use a multimeter"

I found Autozone had a nice fuel pressure measuring kit I could use for free with a refundable deposit of $150.[/url]

With an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and some mineral spirits, the home mechanic can clean his own injectors.

Sonic Cleaner

This one is large enough to clean the injectors for a V8 Dodge. I was fortunate enough to have a fellow Samba member with access to a large ultrasonic clean do the ones for my truck, three of which were packed with junk. They were returned to me in almost pristine condition.

Anyway, a former Samba member's father was an instructor for a NASCAR mechanic team, and his dad is the one who told me to get a sonic cleaner. He explained to me that injectors should almost work forever, and that he had never bought a new injectors for any of the racing cars. They just run them through the machine ever x-number of thousand miles.

So, $35 for a machine (or rather, a useful tool), a few dollars for mineral spirits or cleaning solvent followed by an hour or so of processing injectors and they're almost good as new.

I believe pre-81 vintage BMW ran the same fuel injection as the Beetle. I've found both new and used parts searching BMW forums. For example:

Cost a fortune but if your desperate:
http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp?HC1=0&htarget=...p;HCM=528e

or check in at
www.bimmerforums for pre 1981 BMW's that used the L-Jetronic

I've found used "bmw" parts thru the forums at reasonable prices.

1976 fi Super Beatle convertible
Help! Car ran great. All of a sudden with zero indication my bug dies.
Car will turn over, but there's no power to the fuel pump and won't start.
I jumped the fuel relay w/a paper clip and the car starts right up. After removing the paper clip. I can shut off and restart the car numerous times. But after a few hrs the car will not start again without jumping the relay.
Does anyone have any suggestions on my situation?
Thank you

So have you actually tried to fix it?

Always start by cleaning and tightening all of the battery connections, the connections at the starter and the chassis ground strap.

Then move over to the double relay and make sure all of those connections are good and clean.

Is the fuel pump getting 12 volts? Does the fuel pump make noise (as in cavitation from a clogged up fuel filter from rust in the tank)? The pump should be pretty quiet and never get warm.

Hi, Thank you. I have replaced the battery and a new ground cable.
Replaced the relay and still no power to the fuel filter unless I use the paper clip trick. Then the fuel pump kicks in and the vehicle will start.
I was using a spare battery from my dump trailer till I was able to get it smog.
Do you think I could have ran too much power through the system and burned something up?

There must be a wire somewhere down the line that is not making contact ,hard to trace but can be done with patience ,checked you're fuses, one of my lights wasn't working all fuses looked good but one was crooked ,that is all it took for my light to fail ...

I like a bad connection at the starter to the double relay.

This photo is from a bus...Terminal 50 on the starter.....One red/black wire goes to the ignition switch and the other red/white wire goes to the double relay to power the pump for fuel injected engines.
