Looks like he took some ideas from the new VW concept bus and then made it his own. Very nice work. Though I don't agree with the red/white scheme. Thanks for sharing the link.

Just when you think this project can't go any farther over the top, he cuts a hole in the floor for a shower!

If you don't have the patience to go through every page jump to #23.

the only skill here is CAD/Rendering. Real design is an exercise of meeting various requirements, like where to fit the engine and drive train. Basic physics will not allow two objects to occupy the same space. A paper thin body can not support a pop-up roof and twin awnings.

Where do the tires go when the body lays frame? Up into the seating area?

These considerations are why the VW concept bus never went anywhere, the design was just a fantasy, practically unbuildable. You can be sure VW designers/engineers died a little/threw up in their mouths when the Routan went ahead, but they alone know that concepts are just that, concepts.

This harsh reality is also why design/architecture students are so devastated by crits (where they present their projects and are publically criticised in front of their peers). There is always some merciless teacher that will gleefully expose the flaws.

Or their peers. Who only point out the flaws during crits.

Anybody tell us if the movie is a model of the restoration or inspiration? a design excercise or do they have any conection at all?

it is worthwhile to read the whole thread, the restoration and contruction of the camper is quite interesting.

That's awesome. I like the Country Homes lid with dual awnings. I do have a few questions though.

Does anybody who reads Spanish note if he made any suspension mods? That thing has got to weigh a ton.

Where you you get a 24 hour digital dash clock? Was this ever offered in the US?

What's up with the "eyebrows" on the red van half way down on page 7?

Peers or friends? Friends would save you from the embarrasment don't you think?

My point is that the video looks great, it is easy to draw fabulous things but something else altogether to design something that gets built and used.

And yes I have done that.

Who knows? I simply made a few connections between the movie I posted and this fellows Vanagon. Such things as the paint job, swing out kitchen, double awnings, etc. are very similar ideas. If he was inspired by the concept movie and he made them work in a Vanagon, that is skill in my book. He did a great job. I just don't agree with the interior color scheme.

cool. he must have seen the movie or maybe it is just syncronicity. I can't read spanish so I couldn't tell if the was any reference in the thread to the movie.

The work on the van is fantastic, but like you I am not big on red. It's a bit over-the-top too.

As much as it is interesting, the thought that kept hitting me was weight.
If that adds less than 1000 extra pounds I'd be surprised.

I just switched out my bumpers for the aircooled.net tube bumpers.
The front feels like about 100# and the rear about 80#, and the difference in handling is huge. I don't like it. They look cool, but after just one week, I'm already thinking about getting rid of them.
