To each his own, but it sure seems like an awful lot of hackery for very little gain.

So are you going to use a proper engine seal around most of the engine, and then something else around your new tin?

Good idea, design and implementation. The rest of your rig looks to be coming along nicely too. Cheers! Very Happy

Nice bus and your "hack" Wink is a clean one, nicely done. But I still wouldn't want it on one of my bus because my local "DMV" wouldn't accept it. It will look like a hack more and more as our buses get older and more collectible. And even if DMW or whatever is OK, you never know the future, and it would decrease the bus value.

But you did it now, so enjoy your bus and even if I disagree, next time I'll drop the engine, I'll envy you...

Ah, this is priceless. Its a clean mod and most importantly what the owner wants for HIS bus. Not my cup of tea but its not MY bus either. I like the paint too as I never could get past sage green. IMO its awful. Even when they were new it was still but ass ugly IMVHO.

I always thought that the vin hump was a little unsightly. Has anyone came up with a ligitimate reason for putting that thing there? I think this mod cleans up the engine compartment greatly.

The left air duct of the fan shroud is farther back than the right side, as Dansvan mentioned, clearance to remove the engine.

I think the hump was for an A/C compressor but almost all A/C units were installed state-side and they used a different compressor than das Germans envisioned, so the body ended up hacked anyway.

sweet! the main guy complaining doesn't even live in the u.s. ,
probably lives in some u.k. type place with very very strict mot laws, glad we live in the good 'ol usa where stuff like this slips through the cracks every single day.

where i live i've had friends pulled over with lawn chairs in the back of pick ups with seat belts and was told that was cool and let go on their way, i
have a feeling that wouldn't fly in seattle, larger cities or where ever Pierre G is from. it's all about where your taking it to get cert'd and where you live

Pierre G is a good guy and has helped me out alot but is always a little reserved when it comes to the m.o.t. type laws and alot of the uk based guys are(he's not uk but the laws sound about the same) as they are more stringent over there about this sort of thing.

little things slip through all of the time and in the 15+ cars i've owned i've never had anyone actually come out and check the vin's when buying/selling the car.......
maybe if i got stolen or something you may have a problem....but since you can now pull your engine in 10 mins i'd just take the engine out everytime you go into a store and just lock it up in the bus so no one can get to it or drive away even if they did ....lol

Thanks Wink , and yes I'm reserved because I own and drive VWs since 1987 and I've seen a lot of PO's mods that were more or less "hacks" on our buses. Cutting a hole in the rear compartment to access the gas fuel sender is one of the most common I've seen. And guess what, it wasn't the fuel sender that was out of order Rolling Eyes .

Yes, here (french island in the south pacific ocean near Australia and New Zealand) we have to pass an inspection every 5 years on older vehicles (20+ years old), and the stamped VIN is the FIRST thing they check, just to be sure that you bring the car that matches the title... That law is not very old. Before that, a lot of VW buses were modified a lot, some neglected : same result, they failed inspection and went to the crusher Crying or Very sad
Things happen in years, owners sell their cars, laws change (any helmet law in WA ??)...

That's why I'm always reserved in such mods, not to be a dick, not to criticize those who have skills and actually work on their cars, not to argue, but because I love all VWs on earth even across the oceans and would like them to be preserved the best possible way.

That beeing said, I prefer to see a well cared bus with some minor mods, than a non-modified one, neglected and slowly dieing...
So once again, guitarcrazee, enjoy your bus...

And Jason, you can call me Pierre Wink Pierre G is because username "Pierre" was already taken by someone...

Cheers.
