There was also a beige colour, but I'm not sure what years VW used that colour. _________________ The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth - persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

All Bug steering wheels were Silver Beige in 1962. WW sells that color in a spray can, but the last can of it I bought from them, the color seemed a bit "off" to me.

The silver beige from WW did not match my dash when I did my wheel. I agree with Andy.
Either the dash faded on my '62 or the silver beige the factory used was a different shade.
I had paint mixed to match my dash.
Better comparison before I changed paint.

The thing is, Harris - it's not supposed to match the dash. Silver Beige IS darker than Pearl White, it's supposed to be a slightly contrasting color, not an exact match.
* But, even so, as the photos below show, at least my can of Wolfsburg West Silver Beige is not quite right *
The Pearl White color that my 62 is painted, my brother (who is a professional car painter and formerly worked in an auto paint shop for many years) mixed the color for my car, which ended up just slightly off from spec. Later on I bought a convertibe decklid and the guy I got it from offered to paint it for me, and his paint was mixed to spec so it's just slightly off from the rest of my car. However that does leave me with one nice piece of paint that is probably "On-Spec" for Pearl White.
With that in mind I just went grabbed something (a putty knife) and painted it with my latest can of WW Silver Beige, took an old turn signal switch that is the original Silver Beige, plus for comparison's sake a 1961 Basalt Gray steering wheel, and laid them out in the sun on my decklid. And then with my best camera took these photos - first one with full captions I also used flash in addition to the sunshine hoping to get the truest color results. The second pic here is without the flash.
You can see the WW SB is "off" from the turn switch, but both of them are definately different from the Pearl white background.
At first I was trying to take a better version of this photo I did last year:
But trying to get it lit for a good color image wasn't working.

Andy, I didn't know that. I bought my car 16 years ago from an elderly couple who bought it new. Worn, but nothing changed or missing. 73,000 miles under one ownership. The steering wheel matched the dash and the steering column, so I assumed it was supposed to. Isn't the dash supposed to also be sivler beige in a L-87 pearl white car? Mine was all original and the interior is not an exact match to the car outside, but very close and not in any way close to the silver beige I bought.
I guess I'm not correct, but I like the match I did. |

No, I don't think so. The body shell was painted all at the same time, in and out, so it all should be the same. Silver Beige was VW's standard color in all models in 62 for the turn signal switch, steering wheel, column tube, seat frames, and the bar under the back seat.
Anyway, I think Pearl White is better than that overly yellow-green stuff from WW.
Oh, Just saw that latest question - 27mm is the size socket you need. And hopefully yours fits better than the last one I got! (nice quality control, Allen!) I returned this after I realized it didn't fit, and bought a 1 1/16" socket instead, which works out to 26.98mm, and fits fine.

Another pearl white bug here. In my car the turn signal switch, steering wheel, etc. are all definitely silver beige, not pearl white. _________________ 64' Pearl White beetle, type 113 sedan. Purchased in Hamburg Germany, driven for a year via vw tourist program, shipped to CA in 1965.

Do you have any side-by-side comparisons of ACE's Navajo White next to Silver Beige, similar to what Andy (glutamodo) posted above? |
