				| it reall;y depends on which macco you go to. There is a guy in the local club that had his car done at a macco and it turned out very nice. If you want, I can ask him which one it was when I see him again, and let you know. |

Agreed. I did all the body work and primed it at the local High School. I ran out of good weather so I had Miracle Auto paint it. Turned out very well. _________________ John

I had two cars painted by Maaco, a long time ago. Both went flat withing three months. Used to be that if you did your own prep work they wouldn't guaranty their paint job. _________________ '72 Standard

I am sure there are some decent jobs depending on the location. They are a "franchise" and some are probably better than others.... but most of the paint job I've seen ( on VW's) that were "shot at maaco" had more runs, drips and orange peel than behind the counter of a juice bar!

Check out the one that vwbud can find out about though and talk to them and see some of the work they are doing. You might get lucky and have a good owner who has a decent painter working for him and cares about what goes out. |

When I was a kid I had my first VW ('74 Super) painted at Maaco. They got hair and runs in the paint after I'd spent days wet sanding. They told me those were under the paint they sprayed and not their fault, so they wouldn't fix it. Lame. _________________ Not enough car seats fit into my:

Not sure if your talking about my 73 thing. I had my car painted at Pine Brook Maaco, a guy name Bill is the manager. 973-377-8919. It's a little far from south jersey though.

Bill is really into hotrods and stuff out of the normal. He had painted a Thing back in the eighties and had not seen one since. He really took his time to match the og color and wheels. I know they put extra work into it, that was not in the orginal quote. My car had nothing on/in it. No glass, lights, trim, nothing.

I told Bill I would try and refer more VW's to him and he thought that was great. The best part was they had the car done in two weeks and I stopped by a few time to check the progress.

I can't say enough about Bill and Pine Brook Maaco. I can't tell you how many body shops I took my pictures to and got rediculous prices and time lines. One guy actually told me 10K and a year. Body shops just don't want to do this work for good prices. Plug and play lexus bumpers pay the bills if you know what I mean.

The best part about Maaco is it's all warrentied and they make good on it. I had a run in my door they fixed for free. Bill actually was happy to do it because Maaco corporate takes care of the cost and he didn't loose anything.

				My Maaco paint job.....

I used the Maaco on Norhtland Blvd in Cincinnati Ohio.

They have a brand new paint booth and new ownership that really cares about the end product.

That being said, I did all of the prep work.....removed all windows, rubber, chrome, so they didn't have to tape a thing. All they did was prime and spray. Maaco gets a bad name because people give them CRAP to paint, then complain that it was Maaco's fault. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle project

I've been looking into this too. I plan on fully restoring my '72 Super in a few years, but for now I just want it to be all one color, I probably won't even bother getting all the dents out, I'm not pulling the fenders off, I don't want my doorjambs painted, etc. If I just want it primed and painted, about how much does that normally cost?

I know that it won't be an ideal base to paint and it will be FAR from perfect, but I'm not looking for show quality or anything really near it...just one color that actually has a gloss to it.

The car now...

I was at a show last summer. I met a guy who had a 67 he had painted at Maaco 10 years ago, and did all the prep and body work himself. He had since sold it, but it was at this show. The paint wasn't perfect, but 10 years later it was still holding up. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

They have packages starting around $295, but they always tag on additional cost. I would go talk to your local maaco or at least call. I bet all said and done around $400-500. If you have a few little dent I bet they can fix those very reasonably. It would be tough for me to spend $500 bucks painting over dents, but that's me.

I think every maaco is different, just like any other body shop. You'll be amazed at how excited body guys get when they get any unique car. If their not into it, move on to the next one. _________________ Central Jersey Volkswagen Society - President |

It's held up well. I rushed putting the soft top on and chipped it a bit, but I think Bill will still fix it for me. _________________ Central Jersey Volkswagen Society - President |

Yep, each one is different. I have had two buses painted at maaco and at two different locations. ONe was done near my parents house. Supposedly this maaco is one of the busiest in the US. They did great work (for a $500 paint job). The other was a little closer to my shop so I decided to give them a shot. This one was horrible. Tons of orange peel, painted over things that should have been taped etc.

Anyway, my mentor who got me into cars years ago had a 54 chevy pick-up painted at the same maaco that I was happy with. He had it done 10 years ago and it is a daily driver left outside at night. Paint still looks good (not perfect, but good). For a daily driver, I think it is an option that should be considered...especially if funds are tight. Do all the prep work yourself. As someone else said, these guys spray cars all day long so they have that part down. Dont ask them to do too much bodywork though, on my first one I was told "this is a production shop, we dont have time to wetsand etc.". |
