I was wondering why even the beater ones were sellin pretty quickly. That makes sense if there are "parters" in the area.
Then there are ones like this that have been listed for a month. Can't imagine why it hasn't sold yet (I came oh so close to getting a plane ticket this weekend): http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/4596989484.html
I'm just gonna have to be patient, make sure I have my finances in order, and be ready to go at a moments notice I suppose. |
Mileage considering there isn't any mention of the motor being rebuilt... thats #1.
#2 sounds like a flipper, did a lot of recent work to get it running THEN discovered fridge does not work (JMHO)
#3-4 needs top and fridge too...
10K is a lot at this point. _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

This looks like it still needs a lot of work. The heater fan itself is an expensive PITA. High mileage with no engine history= pass.

Sure are many Westies for sale; today there are also 8 Syncro Westies or Weekenders listed. |

Man, it's not easy to join this club. I've been searching for a few months now and I'm blow away how quickly these things are sold (well, at least the sub-20K ones).
I've been second place in two pretty good deals, but otherwise have been left in the dust westy-less. Is it unreasonable to think I can get myself a decent Westy for under 10K in Northern California? I realize it's going to be a lot more money after I buy one, so that's why I'm hesitant to pay any more (especially on a stock non-rebuilt engine and tranny). I'm also not afraid to get greasy and do some maintanence and put some sweat equity into it, not that I'm looking to sell it afterwards or anything. I just want something safe and somewhat reliable to take the family out roadtripping and camping.
It's hard to compete though when I'm asking for a pre-sale inspection and a little relief on the price while people are saying they'll fly in from all over the country to buy it sight unseen for asking or more
Is there still room in the club for normal middle class families???
Does it get any easier in the "off season"?
Grrr....Anyways, sorry for the whine, but this is the whine topic right? |

I was there all week. If you attended I'm sure we rubbed elbows a few times, if not a jam or two
Hoping to be camping and jamming there next year with a decked out Vanagon Westy. Seems like the ultimate festival camping vehicle. _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

This is the kind of advice I need. Things were selling so fast for a bit there I thought I was buying a house during the boom again. I think I'll sit back and wait for a good deal. I don't mind putting some work in on a van, but what I don't want to do is overpay AND put lots of work in.
Anyone know about how much a full engine rebuild is running these days at a reputable shop? I've seen lots of threads and crunched lots of numbers on swap outs, but I'm not sure how much the rebuilds are going for. I figure anything with over 200K and no rebuild history is probably about due.
My dream scenario is to find one with two to three years of good life left in the engine then spend the better part of an off season swapping in an upgrade like a Vanistan.
Anyways, this is supposed to be a whine thread so..... Boohoohoo... _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

I was there Wednesday AM to Sunday, camped in PTown with Patrick Sauber, Paul Sato, Craig Wilson and others.
I did get to meet a guy from the other online forum I belong to, TalkBass, and I got to play bass for the evening with Roland White, Herb Pedersen, Lonnie Mack, Patrick Sauber and Bruce Johnson. I'd remember if you'd dropped by. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Yeah, I definitely wasn't at that jam

Here's some proof!

Roland was in good form, as was Peter Rowan, who is often just 'off' enough to be really irritating. I really liked the Tribute to Vern & Ray and Junior Sisk.
We'll be back. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Awesome!
I had never seen Peter Rowan before live, but his Friday night set was amazing. Between Roland, Kathy Kallick, and Peter Rowan, that was one heck of a line up!
Hope to run into you next year. I doubt I'll be ready to get in on that jam though _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

Indeed, I've been watching that van from Florida too. I've actually got virtually the same van but 2wd and was considering an upgrade to Syncro as I love the colour and layout of mine. For 22-23k I would have considered it, for 29k and climbing, I'll pass. I don't need the extra drive for the 20k it would cost to upgrade. _________________ 1982 Vanagon Westfalia 1.6TD - Sold (too much vibration)

....where's my crack pipe.....
While the advertiser seems like a good guy/gal (being that he built the Westy as a tribute to his dad), it's odd he/she spends the entire ad justifying their investment and then never states a price they are selling it for. And where is the rest of the interior?

A classic example of someone who went way overboard on a personal whim and now expects to get every dime back. Just because you paid someone else to do all the work does not make it more valuable. All the money spent on labor is lost, it's only functionality that remains. _________________ Currently:
