Maybe 350. I've done a couple of drives to work and back (50 miles one way) and a few around towns (20-25 miles treks). Each time I do it works out some weakness that needs to be fixed.

So far I've found the following issues:

- Front driver side rotor did not have the proper pre-load. Got a bad shimmy on the freeway. Re-tightened, all seems to be OK.
- When the car is on the ground and I push on it so it rocks side-to-side, I can hear a tapping noise. Almost sounds like the caliper is loose on the driver side. Put it in the air and everything checks out. Still tracking down possible culprit
- I used urethane bushings in the beam up front. Embarassed They are already completely loose on both sides. I can grab the torsion arms and see a cm or two of play. Swapping with delrin bushings soon.
- Oil leak on the external oil cooler line. It's the fitting that has the thermostat switch. Somehow caused the fan to stop operating. Checked fuse, and it's not blown. Gonna dive a little deeper this weekend and see what the issue might be.

I'm glad it's happening now. I want to do a trip up the CA coast come early fall and tackling these little things one at a time is probably saving my sanity.

It's funny, you think you've built the thing to be bullet proof, but it will undoubtedly find the weakest point and cause issues.

Interior is next, just looking for a driver seat in decent shape. The one I have now has been molested pretty bad.

Thanks for the compliments and thanks for reminding me about the plate! I have a feedback thread up here on TS for where I got the plate made. I'll let those words speak for themselves.

Are those plates from licenseplates.tv? I've been thinking of getting some for both my cars... Are they as realistic as they look in pictures?

They aren't from licenseplates.tv. They are from another company that I choose to not disclose because of their horrible service. Here's a link about my experience with them:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=514051&highlight=

As far as the plates go, they are as real as they get. They look just like CA plates from the era.

What state are you in? From what I remember, licenseplates.tv didn't make them for CA plates.

PostPosted: Wed Nov 26, 2014 2:28 am    Post subject: The Origin Of this Car Reply with quote

This car turned out very nice. I have to chime in now so many years later because the story never sat well with me but I didn't want to burst the kids bubble at the time. I'm just going to add some corrections to the story. Hugo sent me the link to this build thread in 2012, three years after he bought the shell of this car from me. It was not in a field. I had bought it from a nieghbor of mine that had kept it in a carport for several years. It was garaged before that. It went to my barn for disassembly. I did pull it out into my backyard to show it. I guess an acre might look like a field to a city kid. The car was all primer over original Agave green. Not blue. Once here, the primer was stripped and it was primered with filler primer. I had most of the outer panels sprayed glacier white then wet sanded with 2000 grit. The inside was done also with all of the panels that would be visible when finished wet sanded as well. An ultra reflective shine. It was a panel by panel job with the little fixes as it went along. A few ripples stood out on the passenger rear quarter and the roof had some serious ripples so those areas were prepped again and dressed with filler primer but not finished. That car also had a small panel cut out of the drivers side A post to replace the lower door hinge. The pan was quick prepped only on the top and sprayed black for preservation sake. At that time I had a 58 sedan and a 59 rag ready to build too so I opted to sell the 63. I placed an ad on Craigslist to move it along. Hugo called. He and his Dad came to look. He said
he had another bug that was cut up and rusted out in places and said he didn't want the running gear or anything other than the body and pan. $1500 for the body with doors and the pan. I ended up with the hood and deck lid. I had everything else for the car, but he already had parts, so... This "field find" shell was actually a garage kept, partially restored complete car that was stripped out and sold as an empty shell. Oh, and it had a brand new headliner installed, but it was crooked and the adhesive was weak. It's a beautiful story the way he tells it, but it's not exactly the truth. Something just told me that after all these years I should say something. It's not completely dishonest, but it's just not exactly true. It did turn out well though from what I can tell in the pictures. Who's gonna read this anyway?

Gotta be a drunk post.

The original pics of the car on page 1 are of the car as I received it from you. I think they speak for themselves. "Partially restored" as you call it is a stretch at best. Any work you had done to the car had to be re-done. But what do I know. I'm willing to bet only one of us is in the professional body shop industry, and I'm placing my money on it isn't you.

And forgive me if the lack of city-serviced roads around your neighborhood gave off the wrong impression. Maybe a field wasn't the best way to describe it. I guess it was more akin to a "graveyard".

Not really sure I understand the purpose of your post. I've gotta admit, sounds a bit like you're splitting ass hairs. My apologies if the story wasn't exact to every minute detail. But then again, the thread isn't about how I came to procure a 1963 VW. It's about the restoration of a '63 VW.

It is amazing who actually does read these things, huh? Thanks for the input, Richard.
