|
|
Hi,
I put in a question about speedo cable for split a couple of month ago, and got the answer that they are of different length. But I did not get the answer of how long is the normal bug cable and how long are the split cable?
Will a cable from a later bug fit in a split?
Haven't seen anyone selling a repro speedo for splits. So I guess that a newer one will fit? _________________ Johan, Sweden

Hej Johan,
later speedo cable does not fit, because split needs longer cable. One can be bought from Veteranen Service for 22 euro.
I can find the lengts if you still need.

| I check my info: split has 1350 mm, later beetle 1235 mm. Why not to place the correct one? |

it simply is not available on the places i shop.
i have a catalouge from veteranen service but never bought anything (apart from the catalouge itself at hessich). as they have only german language info and no webshop it is a treshold for me to order from them...
if 1302 fits and is readily available that is good enough for me... _________________ Johan, Sweden

| If it is too complicated you to order from Germany, maybe your local speedo repairer can make a cable for you. Near my place is located a repair shop who offers to make speedo cables: (only Finnish language) http://www.palanto.fi/ |

Thanks for all the good links and info.
I will certainly have to try Veteranen service at some point. Now I ordered a cheapo (89SEK/9€) superbeetle cable that is 1390mm and I hope have the same connection at speedo side, as I needed to order some other parts. If it does not fit, I'll try the german companies.
It seems veteranen service has almost ALL parts available... can that really be so? It is sooo hard to find some parts, can it be that easy that you just call them?!? Is the trick you need to know some german to get access to all the split parts... Guess I'll have to find my old school books in german... _________________ Johan, Sweden

Understanding German will give you access to many hard to find parts. I have found so many supposedly NLA parts there. Do not be afraid to contact the OEMs themselves either. I have found quite a few items sitting in a warehouse corner long forgotten this way. I have also found these companies very helpful and friendly when you inquire about this old stuff. Most are very proud of what they produced or still do. _________________ Bobby

I have a 1302 cable pulled from a 72 downstairs. Please post up if you still need me to dig it out and measure the length. If you've already ordered a replacement I won't bother, but if you need a true and honest measurement let me know.
Heck, I'll sell you the cable if you want it.

Thanks for the offer, but it is not necessary, I already ordered the cable and it should be a little longer than an OG split cable, but not that much... I'll see if it has the correct fitting, but I have a broken cable that I can compare with. So in a week or so, I'll know... _________________ Johan, Sweden

North Hollywood Speedometer in Southern California is a specialist in restoring and repairing VDO gauges. They can build a cable whatever length you need custom. They have all the correct fittings etc. I have used them to restore a lot of gauges with excellent results.
I imagine that any shop in the world that specializes in the restoration of VDO gauges might have the capacity to make cables.
I agree with "Virtanen" above... If you cannot find what you need via the VW aftermarket... I would go to a speedometer shop and have a look.
Also... just for everyone's info... the cable end that inserts into the back of the speedo... should only extend out from the housing about 6mm or so. If it extends any more than that you may damage the guts of the speedo when you tighten it onto the speedo. It will cause undue pressure on the interior mechanism. Some aftermarket speedo cables stick out too far from the cable housing end. The photo above from "Viande" shows the correct length you should have. |

Thanks, this was very useful info, I would hate to ruin my speedo... I'll check the cable when it arrives... _________________ Johan, Sweden

The superbeetle cable came today and looked just like the cable in the picture above...
Length 1400mm... I guess the excess 50mm would be no problem...
I will have to report back if the 50mm generates any problem in a year or two or longer, as my split still has a very long way before ready...
But I'll try it with the speedo before that to see if the connection/threads are the same, but I guess I can use the threaded cap from my old cable... That would anyway look nicer as it is metal instead of plastic... _________________ Johan, Sweden
