Just joined today, hello fellow Samba members...
My wife & I got a Citation II dune buggy from her dad today.
She spent many summers riding in it as a kid, & now it's hers lol!
He built it in 1973, & it still has all of the original parts from that era.
It has a 1600 w/Holley Bug Spray kit, & what he calls a race cam.
From what I understand the Citation II kit is somewhat rare.
We haven't seen another one like it in Ohio.
I took some pics of it today, here they are...

The buggy ran last year, but wouldn't start today.
The starter went bad, & the fuel pump needs rebuilt.
Other than that it's a unique little head turner.

I am a Chevy & Jeep guy at heart, & honestly, I have never liked VW's.
I hope my experience with this buggy changes all that, we shall see...

Thanks man Smile

Her dad took really good care of it, always storing it in that shed.
He always put WD-40 on the sheetmetal parts before he stored it.
It even has the original side curtain windows that came with the kit!

The side curtains are still buried somewhere in her dad's garage.
We're gonna clean them up & take some pics when he finds them.

Thanks man...

Yea, I've seen other Berrin kits online, but only 1 or 2 like this one.

Nice ride! I have (what I believe is) a Citation I. Looks almost exactly the same from the sides and rear but the hood is completely different...

I didn't know that Daleks had made it over the Atlantic, I though they had enough problems with stairs let alone Jumbo Jets... Laughing

Wow, small world man! Nice buggy Smile
We are in Madison Ohio, about 1 1/2 hrs north of Youngstown.

My friend came over today, & we got the buggy running.
Turns out the fuel pump was leaking, so we sealed it with Permatex.
It took a little bit of prodding, but once it got fuel it fired right up.
We did some timing & carb adjustments & got it to run & idle nice.

Here are videos of it running...

http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk319/yerfawked/Buggy/?action=view&current=rear.flv

So far everything is going good with this buggy.
There are a few hard to get at parts, but mechanically it's easy to fix.
I'll be rebuilding the fuel pump, tuning it up, changing oil, etc soon.
The case is leaking, so I'll likely have to pull motor & use some seal string to fix it.
This buggy is starting to grow on me, & I'm a diehard Chevy/Jeep guy!!!

PostPosted: Mon Mar 29, 2010 9:04 am    Post subject: Leaking Pushrod Tubes... Reply with quote

I thought the case was leaking but found out it was the oil strainer gasket & the pushrod tubes as usual...
I know this question has been asked a million times, & yes I used the search feature...
I want to know who makes "The Best" adjustable pushrod tubes.
I don't want to disturb this motor to much, it runs fine & I just want it to stop leaking oil.
I have an extra motor to rebuild for it in the meantime...

**I didn't see an actual 'tech write-up' about leaky pushrod tubes.**
**It'd be nice to have a 'stickied' write-up for such a common problem.**
**I'd take pics, & write about it if necessary if I knew what to buy first.**

Nobody make "good" expandable push rod tubes. There is no such thing.
Just use stock tubes. They have worked for years. And, they actually help cool the oil returning to the case from the heads.
When you put stock tubes in, make sure the welded seams to the top. If they do leak, that is where it will be.
Stock push rod tubes do not leak, it is the seal at the ends that leak. And you will be using the same seals with the the expandable ones.
In fact, when I have not had new tubes to use, and I have needed some in a hurry, I have reused stock tubes. I just stretch them out a little and clean them up.

The one, (and only part I have found so far) EMPI part I will reccomend is the race aluminum two piece push rod tubes. They are higher doller, but very nice. I use them on race engines so I can torque the head first then install the tubes to be certian I get a good head torque.

They use the factory end seals, but the slip section uses a double O-ring seal. They are high quality and do not leak for me. They are really widened at the head end for use with ratio rockers, high lift cams and so forth. I paid $ 45 for my last set.

The plastic ones I would only reccomend for a temp road repair.

That seems to be what every forum says about the stock Vs adjustable tubes.
I really don't want to disturb the heads on this motor at this point if I don't have to.
I'm afraid it'll open up a can of worms & I'll end up having to do more then just tubes. Sad
With my luck the heads will be warped, or something else bad will happen.
Wifey wants to enjoy it this summer, & I'll tear it down this fall if I have to.

What's the difference between the BIG tube & stock tube adjustables?

The difference between the BIG Tube and stock is they allow for relocation of the pushrods, (for High Performance) but work fine for stock applications. In fact, I just put my last set on a stock 1600 without taking the heads off.

I might have a set of expandables out in the shop, I could let go for a good price.
