I'm lookin'. Prefer a rear rack as opposed to the roof carriers. Can't raise my arms too well due to disability. Any clues to a brand? Thanks anyone! _________________ "It's not 'You are what you eat', it's 'You are what you don't SHIT". Wavy Gravy.

We use a bike rack that clamps onto the tow ball; works great. Probably easier to find a tow bar for your VW than a bike rack that'll fit... Can take a pic if you'd like a visual... _________________ Do not follow me, for I may not lead. Do not lead me, for I may not follow. I used to have one like that for my 73 ghia. Bought it in the late 80's at a sporting goods store for about $30. I wish I could find something like this -- or equally retro -- for my 66 bug.
Help! |

Never did post that pic, sorry.
This is how I transport bikes -
Keeps everything suspended out behind, away from the paintwork!
Bolts onto tow ball, nice and secure.

Wanaka?
DM, interested in some more info... how/where is the tow ball fixed to the car? did you get it from a NZ supplier? |

Tow bar is slung underneath and mounts to torsion bar housings via U bolts and also bolts onto the ends of the frame horns, so it's very securely attached to the car. There were variations through the years though and I think the later ones mostly just attached at the bumper mounts and wouldn't be nearly as strong. The earlier ones which mount along the chassis are strong as 'eck but heavy! But also provides great protection from bumps and scrapes for underneath the engine which it shields nicely.
I think these were mostly local manufacture and I've seen them come up for sale fairly regularly (in fact there's one up on TradeMe right now for $1... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Volkswagen/auction-347619886.htm)

Cheers very much, that is tremendously helpful! ...Thanks for the TM tip. Almost too much of a coincidence that I'll be in the seller's area in 2 weeks. How very handy if I win |

It was meant to be
I think that particular auction has already been relisted several times with no bidders; you could very well pick it up for $1. Good luck _________________ Do not follow me, for I may not lead.
