I just finished installing a new Pertronix igniter and Bosch Blue coil in my 65 Beetle with a 1776. I'm not 100% sure my old coil was bad but I am not sure how to test it. Should I use an ohm meter to check across the + and - poles? If so, what reading should I see if it is good?

so when they go bad, i imagine that the OHMS reading would prolly be lot higher, correct?
I used to have a turbo on my bug, and on the tail pipe, i had ran a flame thrower. basically just mounted a 2nd blue coil next to the one already there. that one just had a plug wire running from the coil, to a sparkplug in the exhaust. and a button in the circuit. anyhoo, when i got the turbo off, i kept the coil on the shroud. and sure enough, one day while driving home, it started to sputter, and stall out. pulled over, and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. so i decided to swap the connections to the 2nd coil, and viola, lol. ran perfect.
point is, it never hurts to carry (or install) a second coil for just such an emergency. and i was over an hour away from home, lol. _________________ 1974 Super Beetle: Custom resto in progress

Thanks to pkdmslf and all for your replies. I think the diagram with pics that pkdmslf will really help (my memory really sucks). Thanks again.

After seeing this forum I look into some other forums on the ohms that a good Bosch Blue Coil should have...
Thing is I saw mixed info.. So does anyone have more spacific numbers on the Bosch Blue Coil? I saw a range from 9,000ohms-11,000ohms being in great shape.. Are these numbers accurate? Wondering if anyone knows? Just want to test mine out to see what's up it... RB |

theres a primary and secondary side of coil ...ohms are much higher for one than the other... as long as you have the correct ballast resistor type coil for points (or replacement) your coil should measure somewhere around 2 -3 ohms for the smaller side (cant remember if its the secondary for sure or not...) the other higher one is probably the most important in this case though. _________________ _________________________________________
