After Chico builds my 1835 motor, I like to install a tach, oil pressure and oil temp. guage on my 62' Bug. Are there any dash mounts for these? Where do you guys mount your gauges? |

I mounted a 5" tach w/ shift light on the radio block off plate using a custom billet bracket. As for the oil pressure and temperature gauges, those I mounted on a center console along with my cd player. Works for me!
P.S. never mind the spring attached to the gas pedal! I was having some issues with my linkage return springs, and thats the only thing I could wip up to get me on the road. lol |

I know this may sound dumb, but after you mount the gauges. How are you routing the wires to the gauges from the engine compartment? I've never hooked up guages before? |

I run them under the carpet, under the backseat, through the battery cable/starter cable hole into the engine bay. |

I mounted 3 gauges in the dash slot that did house a radio receiver. Cut an aluminum plate to cover the receiver slot and attached it to the dash with 8 small brass machine screws. Gauge holes in the alum plate were cut using a hole saw. Looks pretty good and didn't make a big mess of the dash. Installed two more gauges centered just under the dash using a standard gauge mount. All gauges were 2 1/8" Dakota Digital. Tach, CHT, oil pres, oil temp, volts.
Except for the CHT, all wires were run under the drivers side door sill cover next to the original front to rear wiring. Have to remove the drivers side back pack panel to get them pulled through. CHT gauge wire is not supposed to be closer than 12" to any wire carrying current, so it is routed through the firewall near #3 cylinder, along the lower inside of the firewall over to the passenger side. Then forward under the passenger side door sill cover and then up under carpet through a hole near the gauge. _________________ 74 Ghia, with 2110 engine |

Hotrodvw, Do you know who made the custom mounts under the dash and how to get a hold of them? It looks like most of you run your gauge wires under the carpet and door sills once it leaves the engine compartment. What gauge of wire do you use? |

I considered mounting mine on a tunnel mounted console, but decided the viewing angle and distance was not right for old eyes. _________________ 74 Ghia, with 2110 engine |

I have oil temp & oil pressure gauges installed to the right of the speedo, using an aftermarket gauge panel.
Also, have a tach mounted under the ashtray. All gauges, mounts and senders are VDO. _________________ Neil.

Had these machined from aluminum in order to countersink the gauge bezels. Started with a wide variety of modern and vintage VDO gauges and had North Hollywood Speedometer reface them cohesively to appear relatively stock.

Kiwi (Dylan Worsley) makes them. Here's a pic of mine in his ad. Hit him up! He made my breather box too! His craftsmanship is very nice, and you can't beat the price for a custom gauge pod.

In my 71 I have a pod that fits 2 dials and placed it up side down and attached it under the glovebox. _________________ 1971 1300 beetle |

Got the same one Hotrod has from Dylan. Real nice and solid piece. Mounted mine dead center under dash above shifter. Looks great. Gotta get a pic up. _________________ 57 Ragtop

I run wires through the ceiling/roof cavity past the interior light using fish tape to pull it through. I left a pull string inside incase I need to pull more wires. Gauges down below are harder to read but I chose not to cut this one up. My tach is held down to the steering column by a home made bracket and those stainless steel hose clamps you see everywhere. Tach is not very stable when you punch it but acceptable.

These are the dials I have under the dash, there an oil pressure and oil temperature. I only have the power and earth connected at the moment. The pod isn't the best it's dipped carbon fibre.
There are a couple more in the gallery _________________ 1971 1300 beetle |
