Sounds like its not worth the time and money... Guess I'll just buy a whole new set up. Any recommendations? Looks like there are a lot of starters out there.
My van is a 83.5 1.9L manual.

Again, is there a rebuilder near you with a good rep?
If not, you have local Auto Parts stores or a dedicated Vanagon / VW vendor like Bus Depot, Vanagain and others. Vanagain is in New Jersey I believe. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have it rebuilt. On another note do you guys know what this is? I assume its the bushing but it looks different from the replacement bushing on new starters... Not sure if I should just use this one or get a new bushing....

Figured out what the bushing was.Its for the wiring on the solenoid, maybe to keep the nut from vibrating off?
