What do those stars denote that you can see on either side of the engine number?

How did they manage to lose it in the first place? I know it's a VW, but it's still a car, and is relatively large.

From this what I know car was cought by US Army 1945 on the Obersalzberg and was bought from a VW dealer 1946 from the US Army in Berchtesgarden. The new owner familie had the car so from 1946 to yesterday Smile

What a find, maybe Hitler himself took a ride in it. It must have been close to him, stationed at the Platterhof Garage, or something. Very nice.
