Can you make a larger engine run on 6v instead of a 12v? Why you ask? Just curious is all..i see everyone wanting to make a 6v into a 12v, im just wondering if you can make a 1600 run on 6v, incase i want to change the engine in my car. Thank you in advance |

the difference between 1300 and 1600 are just bore sizes really...
granted if you run 6v ALL your stuff has to be 6v _________________ 1974 AS Beetle

You need a replace the coil, generator, electric choke and shutoff solenoid if there is one. _________________ Glenn

So in response to the above, your saying in reality it should work. I see all these 1600 and above engine for sale as turn key or long block, not alot of 40 hp out there anymore, that is the reason, once my 40 hp takes a poop, getting a larger engine is easier...i know alot of you will say "rebuild it"...get it rebuilt..etc....but it is EASIER to buy another engine, and as long as it can run the 6v i will be happy. |

I just built a dual carbed 6V 1600 for my car -
Coupla things to keep in mind:
Flywheel - bigger engine demands bigger clutch. 6V 200mm flywheels are out there but a little harder to find. You can bolt an early flywheel to a later crank (but not vice versa).
Generator - 6V generator fan has a ring of holes in it to draw cooling air through it. Later doghouse fans don't have these but they can be added. Doghouse cooling is definitely a good idea for a larger engine. In the pic below, modified doghouse fan on the left, stock 6V fan on the right - see the difference?
Cooler - Doghouse cooler can be added by drilling the holes in the case mounting ears to 8mm and using a step stud.
The 6V starter has no trouble at all cranking this over, even with 8:1 compression and it goes like stink (well, compared to a 40hp anyhew)
So yes, it is possible. 6 volts should be enough for anyone _________________ Do not follow me, for I may not lead. Do not lead me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either; actually just bugger off and stand over there will you. |
