|
|
This is not for a purist. My little psuedo class 11 bug is now bullet proof. It is a 76 body on a 68 pan with early 70 rear fenders and tail lights, complete with body lift and cavalier seats.
I used the UPOL Raptor tintable UV protected bedliner kit with olive drab tint. I only had one kit (1 gal) and found that I need to buy a second kit for better coverage. I was able to coat the exterior with one heavy coat and one light coat. The same with the dash, interior doors and jambs/pillars. The second kit I want to buy will allow me to put another heavy coat on the exterior and to coat the trunk and engine compartment. I am pleased so far. Here is a quick picture:

From that build it looks like he wants it to play in the mud. |

I sprayed it on. Scrub brush and power washer should work. _________________ If you blame others when you fail, give them credit when you succeed! |

That is the "Industrial" look, it reminds me of the bugs they used in the war. _________________ This is my 23rd year in the Auto Body/Paint Game!

That's exactly what I'm doing to my '69. I've had the UPOL kit for about six months, just never have gotten around to prepping the car yet (too busy trying to figure out where to mount this, modify that, etcetera). How did you prep the car? Did you sand to bare metal, or just scuff the paint? I'm going down to bare metal on mine with 80, touching up with 120, then etching primer, 220, then bedliner. Does that sound like it would work? |

Man I would have to think long and hard about doing that. That stuff isnt fun to get off if you ever wanted to. Flat paint I can see, but bedliner? |

I agree. But--any bug that's post 65--I say do whatever u want. If you do spray bedliner--I think that's WAY too much prep. If the paints in good condition--just scuff and spray. This stuff dries like a rock--I wouldn't worry about adhesion at all _________________ I dont take shortcuts, i put care and pride into all i do--for a fair price of course |

I used a nylon cup wheel attached to my angle grinder to scuff it up. The bug is my daily driver/toy. It is put together with mismatched parts. I really like how it turned out. _________________ If you blame others when you fail, give them credit when you succeed! |

I cannot speak for the OP, but I don't ever plan on selling my '69, so the thought of the huge depreciation in value isn't any concern. It is a nice reassurance that mine won't ever rot again in my lifetime. Form follows function as far as I'm concerned, and I couldn't possibly care less about what others think of what I do to it. When it comes to pre-'65 cars, I agree with most purists- save it, don't slaughter it. But then again, if mine was a '49 Split, I'd still throw fat fenders on it. To each their own, they say. |

From someone that has just removed bedliner from a bug. It is very hard to do. However, once the bedliner starts to degrade (peel, etc) there not much you can do except take it down to bare metal |

A few more. The dark spots on the doors are from when I tried to cover some of the thin spots with a spray can I had made up with the same paint material that was used for the tint. It will be covered with the next round of bedliner.

This is the current project car when I first got it. It has bedliner on it. The bedliner was sprayed, rolled and brushed on. From what the widow of the PO told me the bedliner is less than ten years old. You will notice that it has started to peel in many places. So for our high intensity UV, bedliner is not forever solution. |

looks great dude. i just did mine today in a black color. like you, it's my daily driver/toy and i'm not interested in other peoples opinion (unless they like it-haha). my last bug i painted in olive drab duck boat paint from cabelas. i loved it and it got a ton of attention everywhere i went. thought about doing this one the same way but had a gallon of this stuff sitting in the garage that i'd gotten on clearance at lowes (less than $40) so i thought why not. i was already planning on doing the fenders and aprons since they weren't quite right and it's not a car i'm wanting to invest a ton of money in. it went on them so well that i decided to do the whole car (exterior). the interior, engine compartment, and under the hood are still orange (i'm an oklahoma state fan-go pokes!). i'm a low maintanence kinda person and this is gonna work well for me. i completely understand that doing this to a car makes many people cringe (especially those who can lay down some nice paint) so i won't be offended if you go off on me/us for it. lol. to each their own. anyway, i'm diggin your ride. keep thumpin that bible where you are. i'm taking care of it here.
ps, where did you get the roof rack? i'd like to add one of those. |

You can paint over the bedliner with the olive drab when it fades if needed. The roof rack is a vw rack that I picked up on craigslist for $60. I see them from time to time, and also on the Samba. Thanks for the words brother... _________________ If you blame others when you fail, give them credit when you succeed! |

The OD appeals to my Army Brat blood. However, I think it would look even better with black bumpers, black trim, and black rubber seals. |

Ditto - Raymond. Black bits. I remember seeing one about a decade ago with German MIL (not Nazi) stickers. It added just a tick of color and interest.
