Scott brought his ragtop to us to have us finish the metal work and body work then paint! It has plenty of ugly spots on her but nothing to outrageous! I got your body off and set the door gaps then welded them shut temporary while i then cut out the drivers side heater channel and got the new one fitted and tacked into place. We then got the inner front fender well patch panel all fitted ready to weld into place! Going to try nd get the metal all welded in then sandblast the entire shell and start the body working process!!!

Well, it is GREAT to see my dream start coming together. Im not sure if anyone out there fully understands how much this build means to me. I'm glad to see some progress and cant wait to see it come together.
As far as my plans for this car....I want it to look basically like the one below, but a little lower and a few more of my own tweaks!

The green car looks nice. The back is probably low enough, but the front could come down an inch or two. |

Yeah I want it about the same, but the front a little lower. I would like some airbags eventually. Maybe around a 2000cc motor. I also want the sunroof to be tan. This one is going to be DRIVEN A LOT! |

First question: What replacement heater channels are you using? _________________ - e

As far as the heater channels, I cant remember the brand, but I bought them at Keith's Auto Parts here in WV. They specialize in VW's.
As far as the apron, Joe said he should be able to repair the one on the car. I am not as familiar with the older bugs as I am with the ones in or around the 70's. I didnt realize it was not the right one when it was purchased. It was supposed to cover that year. |

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I relly enjoy it when you guys comment on our builds it really helps keep us motivated to get the job done!!!! As far as what brnd of chennels these re i was going to look at the name on them but forgot to so I will in the morning. And dont worry we are keeping the "H" apron on it. Scott if you look at my first picture it is compring the 2 aprons. The OG one on your car has the stiffner beads in the shape of an "H" right above the decklid latch.
Anyways I had a great day on your car today. I got the heater channel most of the way welded in place. Then installed the left rear crossmember the I cut out the left rear lower quater panel and inner wheel well mounting area and complete inside corner and fabbed and installed all new metl and got them 90% welded into place. I also got your left front lower inner wheel well welded into lace nd welds ground down. This girl is getting more solid by the hour!!! I think I had the pan bolted on and off 4 different times to make sure i was happy with all mounting points! Your car is now solid enough that tomorrow I will take it off the man and put in on the rotisserie to finish the rest of the metal work!!!!! Should be another good day tomorrow!!!

Scott I'm glad your happy but i hate to be the bearer of bad news but i'm pretty sure it wont be painted in a couple of days!!!!!!! LOL I mean you havnt even given me the paint code yet! LOL
I had a good day today again on your baby. I didnt get as many hours in as planned but forward progress was made . I got the right rear inner wheel well panel cut out with all the ugly weld gibble gobble! And also fit and installed the right rear lower quarter panle then got all welds ground dwon as well. My goal was to get it solid enough to mount it onto the rotisserie for easier work angles and i did meet that goal so I considered tody a great day ven though it wasnt a full day!!!
Also Scott do you plan on running US spec bumpers with the towel bars? Or just the blades? Let me know so I know wether to leave the provisions on the apron or delete them?
Also the heater channels say they are made frm the J.P. group out of Denmark !

Well, I must say that I am happy again today! It looks like things are going well on the build! I think I would like to just have the blade style bumpers. Im not a big fan of the others with the extra support bracket/overrider.
Keep up the good work and I will try my best to get you a paint code. I cant wait to see some more pics! |

Scott,
I have your car scheduled to sandblast next monday morning!!!!!
I have plenty of other stuff to work on in the mean time. Im going to start going over the front fenders and fitting them onto the body. I dont want to do the rears untill it gets blasted and I see what all i need to do to the rear apron and bumper mounting areas. I also am going to strip the doors and start body working those babies and getting them nice and straight along with your decklid. The removables we will sandblast here in house and can get them all nice and smooth and in primer this week!!! SO I guess lunch break is over and back to the shop I go. Update pics later for you!!!! _________________ Joe
