do I need to replace the rod bolts or nuts (or both) on a 1973 porsche 914 2.0L The reason I'm asking is everything that I have searched and read says they are TTY (torque to yield)and you should replace both. I purchased arp 104-6006 bolts and nuts which state they are for both the 1.7 and 2.0, but they are too short. Are the 1.7/1.8 rods different from the 2.0 rods? |

2 lt engines have 50mm journals,1.7and 1.8 lt engines have 55mm journals ,you need the long bolts for 55mm journals and best to replace all the bolts ,you realize you need the rods resized after replacing the bolts _________________ I like hammers. Lots of hammers. Hammers and me go way back.

Did you mean to say that the 2lt has the 55mm journals (not 50mm) Then yes I need the longer bolts for the 55mm. Yes rods have been rebushed/resized. Every place That I look for rod bolts only list one for both the 1.7 and 2.0
does anyone know of a place that I can order the rod bolts for a 2.0lt I can't find and place that sells separate sizes sense the 1.7/1.8 and the 2.0 are different sizes. even arp website only lists one bolt (104-6006) for both the 1.7 and 2.0 |

The 1.7 and 1.8 has 55mm rod journals. Two liter type 4 (both 914 and bus) have smaller 50mm rod journals. |

Well I can't find the correct bolts that I need, so I called Rimco and they have them and will install and re-size the big end for me.
Sense the bolts are an interference fit they distort the rods when pressing them in...so the big end of the rods need to be re-sized when installing new bolts.as "blue77bay" noted. Thanks for all the help in this matter. |

Thanks for correcting that Dawie! BTW, I have 260K miles on my bolts and 3 rebuilds. Runs better then ever and I red line it at 5500. I would be afraid of after market bolts. I wonder what Jake Raby does???? _________________ 75 type 2 http://gusc1.tripod.com/1975vwtype2

If you take a good picture of the rod bolt in question I can likely tell you if it is torque-to yield or not. |

Hauls 55 gallon drums of stock rods to the scrap yard... Nothing we build utilizes them. _________________ Jake Raby

The stretch bolts usually have either a reduced shank size and/or the threads extend WAY longer down the bolt than needed, this allows it to stretch evenly
the old bolt, which is the lower one in the pic, does not look like that at all
the arp bolt does have some of that going on, probably just to reduce stress points and just plain nice design. |

these are the bolts that are too short. If installed they will only allow the nut to thread on half way. Like I said in the first post I can't find the part number for the longer bolts(arp) these are for the 1.7/1.8 rods. The cost of the arp bolts (if I can find them) and the cost of re-sizing the big end is close to AA h beams with arp bolts.......I may go with the china stuff. |
