Has anyone else seen or used the Triple Lift garage jack that's available at a number of automotive stores? |

homedepot.com has it cheaper than Amazon. $129.99. I just bought a motorcycle/ATV jack, but I'm thinking I'd rather have that hydraulic cart from Harbor Freight. It would be much easier to load an engine on/off a pickup truck or onto a stand since it has a much higher maximum height. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Hydraulic Lifters

Great. Thanks so much. This will be the 3rd time pulling my engine in the past 6 months (I like to tinker ). I've got the HF lift on order. This wood plate definitely makes sense.
Thanks for the great info. _________________ Bill

Just used the atv jack for pulling and installing engine on my type 1. Nice. I also made a wood plate adapter similar to GP. THANKS. _________________ Bill

I have used that jack to remove my T-4 but it doesn't go high enough or low enough. If I use my ramps to raise the bus up enough to get the engine out under the apron, the jack won't reach high enough to support the engine and if I use a plate like yours the engine won't go low enough to clear the apron. I end up raising the bus up just enough so the jack and plate supports the engine, disconnect everything, then when the engine is lowered I have to jack up the bus so the engine clears the apron. It's only a difference of about an inch. Might as well be a foot. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

Which jack? The one just linked from HF? Or any ol' MC/ATV jack as is being discussed here?
I'm planning to get one for my upcoming T-IV pull, but I do understand your dilemma...I've run into that in the past with Beetle engines. But it surprises me, because the T-IV engine seems so low-profile, I would've thought it'd be a slam dunk. But perhaps not.
Thanks.
(BTW, it's that on sale/sale one at HF I was thinking of getting.) |

I just made up the wooden adapter described above. Putting a varnish over it now.
The latest jack from HF had its bolts a little closer together, which would make the underside pieces a little shorter to fit between the bolts. Also, I only used one layer of 1x2 on the bottom; I think it will hold it from sliding with just the one. With just one mine can slide front to back; we'll see if that's a problem or a handy feature. If it is a problem, I can add a couple of blocks to hold it.
There is a round rod cross piece (side to side) between the beams those bolts attach to, and two layers would interfere with it, though a notch could be cut. Once you look at it, you'll see how long to cut those pieces.
It will be many weeks before I put my motor in with it, but I know it's a much safer procedure, especially with just one person. Less chance of damaging anything, too. On my Type 3 FI motor, there is precious little room in any direction, and my old method of using a single floor jack left it wobbling and required more back strength than I now want to invest in the operation!

Busstom- The jack I have is the earlier version of the HF jack. Not really any different though. I could remove the carbs and gain a little bit of room getting it out but it's the oil filler that causes some of the problem. I remove the engine and trans as a unit. As I remember the travel is only 18". Any floor jack will be about the same. Believe the T-1 motor would be easier since the apron is removable.
I also have run onto this with my '65 bug. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

I use Harbor Freight 3 ton jack with their $40 support beam. A block of wood on the center of the jack takes most of the engine load, and the support beams keep if from tipping left or right. It can still rock forwards and backwards but it balances pretty well. Once it's down another block of wood on the body of the jack makes a very stable platform. With this setup and a cheapie 2 ton jack I was able to pull the engine and tranny together by myself without any hassle at all.

Reviving this old post to give a big kudo to Grandpa Pete for the platform design. I bought a HF lift and made a platform per his design and it worked awesomely.
Thanks!!

I agree. The back pain he has spared me with that design is enormous! I have used it on my Fastback and recently my Bus. R&R went so much easier and safer! BRAVO!!
My only mod is that the clever height/cant adjustment gets in the way of my muffler and/or carrier, so I may replace it with a fixed pitch wedge that suits the particulars of my engine and driveway slope.
