Nice write up!
At the end of the post you mentioned you bent the end of the right? Can you elaborate a little more? _________________ 61 ragtop, 12 turbo beetle |

I did that mod back in 1997.

Chris659,
In that last picture (the one with the tape measure), you can see the linkage bracket laying next to it. Right near each end, the bracket has an existing bend at nearly 90 degrees. In my case, I needed it just a bit longer. In order to accomplish this, I "flattened" out the 90 degree bend; effectively lengthening the piece. Once it was the correct length, I had to re-bend slightly to make the piece flat again. Make sense?

Edse, make sure to lube all of the moving parts with a little grease. They will move so much easier and prevent further wear. _________________ "A petrol engine can start readily, run smoothly and give every appearance of being in good order, without necessarily being in good tune." - Colin Campbell, "The Sportscar Engine" |

A little off topic, but does anyone know if the older (non-doughouse) flaps are the same as the doghouse ones. I know the rear connector bar is different to clear the doghouse cooler. I have an older shroud with flaps, but am converting to 36HP doghouse style. Just seeing what parts I need to dig up. |

I dont like using greezzee as it attracts dirt& abrasivs.get some graphite spray and coat the parts nicely, then just a tint bite of oil on each contact point, graphite likes oil& atracts it so ti should stay& not attract&hold crap if you dont over do the oil. |

The dirt that would be attracted to the tiny bit of grease at the friction points of the flaps still will pale in comparison to the dust and grime that gets on those flaps over time. Believe me, I have 40 sets in my garage and dirt will get on every square inch of those little guys.
I also have some flaps that have been ovaled where the arms pop out of the flaps due to wear. That's why I now do it.
Todd, the flaps are almost exactly the same. The non-doghouse flaps are a little longer on the arms, if I'm not mistaken. I've used non-doghouse flaps on doghouse setups, and I had to add additional washers to get the right play. Also, the right side flap has an additional sheet metal piece on the top of it that the non-dog version doesn't have. I'm not sure what the little flap is for. _________________ "A petrol engine can start readily, run smoothly and give every appearance of being in good order, without necessarily being in good tune." - Colin Campbell, "The Sportscar Engine" |

That was fantastic, well done. That is how I did my T-4 Cali Style fanhousing but with two noted differences.
One is on a T-4 you must beware that the #1 spark plug hole is very close to the linkage and you have to make sure the linkage does not hit the plug wire or insulator.
Two is the rod that goes to the thermostat has to be custom made due to the additional length needed. Also on a T-4 you will be using a T-1 thermostat holder. For a T-4 I recommend using the later T-1 thermostat that opens at 90 c instead of the 80c . T-4 runs cooler so you need to let the engine warm up longer. T-4 or T-1 the 36 hp fanhousing really adds extra spare to the engine compartment and allows for easy adjustment of duel carbs. _________________ email: [email protected]

Me too man! I used the older “rounded” 36hp shroud and put my flaps in tonight. I live in a climate where we get very hot weather and very cold weather too. It should help with warm ups. _________________ 1776cc, CB crank, CB 2241 cam, CB light lifters, CB H-beam rods, CB light flywheel, Mahle forged pistons, A1 Sidewinder exhaust, Dellorto drla 40’s, Hoover modded case, fully balanced, fully flowed, heads by www.type-emotorsports.com, Air ride suspension by https://www.airkewld.com/?Click=3989 |
