Anybody know the proper oil fill level for this air cleaner?
Is it the Lowe level where there is an overhanging flap of metal or that seam line above the slope and just below the intake holes?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/69bug/page45.jpg

says fill to the line
but where is the line.?
in a 1968 , you off the lid and look inside.
on that inside lower rim is a pressed in ARROW this arrow point to the line.

I'm not sure of the year. I bought it to replace also incorrect single snorkel cleaner on my 71 engine.
Not sure what a "rim lip" is.

The lower part, just above the bottom, looks like this

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't see how looking at owner's manual pages that say "fill to the mark" is helpfull. Been there done that. My point is, where is the friggin "mark".

The actual '71 oil bath is the one with the OYO thermostat, now unavailable except by luck or used.

Looks like yours is a 68-70 with the cable actuated flaps.

Here's a pic from my '71 oil bath which I think will have the same base dimensions as yours.

You see that dopey looking arrow thing at the top of the pic? I always filled it to the bottom of the arrow and never had a problem.

first off, the single snout cleaner is correct for the '71 model year, that is a one year part with a thermostat controlled pre-heat flap (the cleaner will have a big spring thingy on the side) what you have pictured looks to be a double snout cleaner (the picture is awful and blocks all the parts important to identifying its year) from a 67 or 68. I digress however, there should be a lip just above the actual bottom of the air cleaner, you fill up to this lip. on later air cleaners there is an arrow stamped in the metal (an actual indent) to show the fill mark. earlier ones had a red line. sometimes this arrow is pretty hard to notice due to age and or grime.
hope this helps
happy trails

you did not read my post
i said, see the manual
then see the arrow

the manual shows where to look
then look and see the arrow
if you'd have photo'd the cleaner, 90degrees rotated, we'd be pointing fingers now. Am i right?

if its not there, then it must be some very odd vw air cleaner.
but mine is a 2 snout too , in 68 .

i cant speak (say) for all 2 million 68s Air-cleaners made world wide.
but the USA variant does have the arrow, (needs to be clean to see it)
maybe yours is like a mis-stamped coin, a rare collectors item Rolling Eyes

some cleaners have other stickers on the side, with ways and means ,
stated,

the Bentleys states 66-69 (cant speak for 70+)

there are 4 variants... in first paragraph.
S3-Pg8
the KG cleaner is unique. 4th variant.
66 single snout.
67 2 snouts.
in aug, 67 the 1500 , the engine thermostat operates, the.....xxxxxx

page 9
states FILL IT TO THE MARK.
use 0.95 pints of engine oil. (that is all it state)

for sure ,do not over fill it , or risk oil induction,
