Mrs. melville has had this car over 20 years, and now it's time to make some progress again. She rescued it from a guy who was going to abandon it when he moved, did a couple quick fixes, and drove it for 5 years. We started to restore it in 1995, disassembling it and getting the body work done, but then she became pregnant with our first child and we moved 600 miles. Eventually our body guy finished the paint and he actually delivered it to us in 2001. It's sat here since:

A little tidying:

And a bit more:

And it's just about ready to move outta there and into this fine abode:

After we get the Splitty out of the way (moved to where the Beetle was sits, kind of a hostage exchange). Goals for the winter are to get the chassis detailed and the body securely mounted to it. Hoping to make the move tomorrow before the rains come and turn that part of the yard into a mud pit.

Eventually, Senor Pan, Mrs. melville will be able to motor about mit the Schiebedach open. Car is a Euro model, has been updated to 12 volt and full synchro trans. We may reinstall the 40hp that came with it or possibly start looking for a '60 spec 36er with the subtly different tin. I'm picturing the 12 volt conversion for the semaphores will be a minor challenge, and a bigger one will be making them work at the same time as conventional flashing signals. Mrs. melville will accept no less.

Otherwise, it's just some schmoe reassembling an antique German economy car.

Perhaps you'll consider a fully balanced single port 1600 with bosch alternator..though not as period correct as the 36 or 40 it will provide adequate power for motoring comfort on todays highways..A fear of mine is the womenfolks distaste for the utilitarian nature of the 36,females require some testosterone for driving pleasure..

Given that I am a firm believer in generalizations and stereotypes, I'm callin'
"bullshit" on this entire thread. It is a known fact that all beancounters are fastidious neat-freaks.

Melville-

Not VW related, but I was just wondering what one does with that bicycle(or tricycle) with the concrete wheels? (with the stuff from the Costco garage)
Or is it just "yard art"?

Good luck with the Bug!

That's a Hobart Brown original on loan to our neighbor. Do a google on "kinetic sculpture race ferndale" for more info.

I do believe that the concrete wheel is a genuine "Early".

I've seen film of Hobart Brown actually riding that thing. I'd thought it was just a display thing, but he made it to ride. Not terribly fast, though.
