I just bought a 1978 Champagne Edition, and I am pretty sure I got one steal of a deal!!! I paid $1250 for it and everything seems to be OK interior wise and exterior. I want your guys opinion if I did well or not, as well as know some past history of these possible rare beasts!!!!

Unless the frame is totally rotted out you got an amazing deal. And from the pictures I bet you're not going to be doing much welding anywhere.
Engine details? Even if it's missing that's still a good price. _________________ 1976 Westy

Nice bus for a good price. What kind of shape is the engine and transmission in? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Well just doing that is a major bonus. You'll want to do a few things before you start it again like changing the oil and new, clean gas. Fuel lines are a biggy too. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

| Well I did accomplish a whole change of fluids before I even thought of firing it up. I changed spark plugs, and fresh gas, ect, how hard is it to change the fuel lines? |

They sell kits. Check out German Supply. It will take a couple hours or so. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I like champagnes, they are the most prolific of the specials and you do see quite a few.
I'd put them in the same category as sage green westy's...they are still around because people love them. What was once considered a rarity among the masses is now commonplace as a survivor. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

Very nice bus. Congrats on your purchase. I think the late Westy is a miracle of small space engineering, but I also love the Champagne 2 and the Wild Westerner. One day my stable will have one of each. Keep the photos coming. _________________ *****************

It's heaven, ain't it?! Lol
It's not a rarity, but I don't think commonplace is accurate either. I'm glad they're popular right now though, it's funny.

Hell of a deal. The Champagne Edition I (1977) was a special edition bus, white on brown two-tone. It had a creamy- interior with deluxe trim on the panels. The Champagne Edition II (1978)was a special edition bus, fox red on brown two-tone with factory stripes, as you might have noticed It had many one year only brown interior bits, like brown dash, brown instrument cluster, brown horn button, etc. It also originally sported the deluxe interior paneling trim. It is arguably the most stylish bus in history.

Agreed to everything above, and to add to it, the CEI was available only as a transporter whereas the CEII was available as both a Transporter or a Westfalia camper conversion. I've also seen CEII Buses converted to a camper by Riviera Motors. The CEII campers are all Agate Brown with Pastel White roof. The 78 CEII Transporters are all Date Brown with Fox Red roof. I have a '78 CEII Westfalia and I love it.

Thanks for the addtional info, VDT. I couldn't recall the names of the 77 tones so I kept it simple! Interesting about the camper conversion too.
That looks like a hell of a time. Kudos! _________________ -Tony
