hey have a quick question for anyone that runs this setup like the photo bellow

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

from vw-resource.com

did you put anything on the threads of the sensor to stop any leakeage? and what did you torque it down to?

this is what i plan on using

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO%2D323%2D064

going into a 67 ghia then mounting a gauge in the dash, already been precut by PO so might as well make use of the holes Laughing

Nope, never run one there - there isn't oil flow across the sensor so it doesn't give useful readings. Even with the problems of a tee it would be better at the stock location.

There is always a small amount of flow, the plunger isn't o-ring sealed. That location actually works pretty well.

No thread sealant. It isn't npt threads, it seals on the gasket.

OK, there isn'tsignificant flow across it.

You will not get a meaningful indication of engine or engine oil temperatures with a sensor at that location.

But you can show off your nice oil temperature gauge - seems to be more important to some.

More accurate than being in the drain plug anyway.

i have the engine out right now so just want to put the plug on then wire it up later before i have oil in the engine
everyone seems to think its a better spot then the oil drain plug and some other spots.

as much as i like the idea of the thermometer dipstick just doesn't seem useful while driving

thanks for the info tho

No, I wouldn't even say that - at least at the drain plug the oil will slosh about a bit, the sensor isn't stuck down a hole.

I run mine there, used gas pipe "sealant goo stuff" from lowes. Just snugged it down, no leaks.

So if the consensus is that isn't the optimal spot for an oil temp reading, where is the best place for an accurate reading? I'm also looking to install an oil temp gauge and would like an accurate reading.

We have compared most of the different locations and the pressure relief sender will give you the highest (hottest) reading.

I've used almost every sender location over the past 38 years (except the Type 3 block-off plate) and haven't found much difference between any of them. I currently use the oil relief location in my 2332 cc and didn't have to use any sealant, just the gasket and torqued moderately.

I've use the relief location for 18 years and just use the crush washer like the stock plug used.

Drain plug works fine if you never drive over 25mph, above that the road draft cools the bottom off and gives a false low reading, just ask anyone who has tried it there.

That isn't a problem though if you are aware of it and only use the gauge to watch for changes in trends.

Also there it hangs down low and is highly susceptible to damage

This is how I do it. Inline with your full flow oil lines right off the pump. In the oil flow, non-restrictive, and real time temp of what the engine is seeing.

I'd sell those adapters if I knew where to get them. Wink

It's a great idea.

But there's nothing wrong with the cooler relief plug either, but only there on dual relief cases.

The fitting can't be cheap.

In the filter base is free and easy.

I've done this as well, but reserve that location for my pressure sending unit. It helps get the clutter out of the engine bay. IMO, the tip of the sender being in the oil flow is the best reading possible. This scenario of course all depends on what the sender is mounted in, which sender is used, etc...
