Bruce had seen my wifes custom ghia that we built at a show this past summer and decide to have us build his ghia as well. His car was purchased new by his mother in 73 and has been in the family since. It truly is probably the most rust free solid ghia ive ever had the pleasure working on. The worst is the left rear quarter panel, his mother was hit by a big ole station wagon and it was repaired but very poorly by a body shop, The rest of the car is super nice, so nice that we will not be taking it off of the very solid origional floor pan!!!!! We will be removing the auto stick and converting it to 4 speed and also removing the dealer installed Air conditioning, so if anyone is in the market for factory A/C and or a complete auto stick set up let me know , Im sure Bruce will be wanting to sell these items. We are going t be doing some custom touches to his baby as we go along and so far his Ideas should look great and will stand out in a line up of ghias at any shows he attends!!! Heres a couple pics of it as we are just starting tear down and i will update as we go along!

Joe, that is probably the same color red as the 72 at least that is what it shows in the paint section.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/paintcodesghia.php
I would do a paint match to that car to see if you can get a better match than I did.
The color I used looks really good but not a dead match. Too bad I trimmed out the vert Sunday you could have gotten me a color formula.
The car seems like the one I am doing, this is going to be a nice one.
Leave it totally stock, or just lower it with some cool wheels. |

That is a complete dealer install A/C setup and its all going to be for sale and its all there and worked last time driven, and by looking at the condition of the car i would bet all the A/C components are good. I have 1 guy ahead of you thats interested in it but if he dosnt buy it I will let you know.
We did get all of the removables off today but somehow we forgot to take pics. Sorry Bruce i will get some fresh progress pics up soon for you. _________________ Joe

We got Bruces motor and transaxle pulled out this morning and removed the torque convertor and flex plate and installed a regular flywheel then mounted it to the test run stand so we can do a leak down test and check the over all condition of his engine. This car is sooo nicew and solid for the most part. The worst area is the left rear quarter where his mother got smacked pretty good by a station wagon , and was repaired very poorly by a bodyshop back then.

Ricky got Bruces motor stripped down to the longblock and dropped off to Ron our engine builder. He then went to town stripping the rest of the car down and its just about completey stripped as far as were taking anyways. I forgot my camera in the shop and will have to post up pics tomorrow of the progress!! _________________ Joe

Well we just about got her all stripped down as far as were planning to for now. And RB went ahead and dove into the left rear 1/4 panel to see what we have??? Shes ugly. I think were going to try and find a very nice donor 1/4 panel and replace the entire panel versus trying to fix this mess.
So if anyone on here knows of a very good left rear 1/4 we are in need of one.

Look on the bright side, at least the car's going to be substantially lighter without all that filler once you finish! |

Well weve located a quarter panel for Bruces ghia this week and its on its way up here!!! Weve gotten the tear down pretty much done and started doig some modifications to her. Weve de chromed the side trim holes, Shaved the front nose emblem and started what little rust repair there was to do on this rock solid gem! We also got Bruces longblock from our engine shop already. Hes going tl be running a nice lil 1641cc,with cylinder head tricks from our engine guy, with ratio rockers, electronic SVDA distributor and a killer set of Kaddieshack.com carbs , Should be a nice lil peppy engine for Bruce to cruise around with! Weve also sent our his gauges to Mattingly Bros to have them build him a tricked out set of gauges including turning his clock into a tachometer!!!
we also got his engine tin all test fitted and trimmed and modified and body worked ready for powder coating!
heres a couple pics of my engine builders shop! Super clean and organized!

Joe, what filler did you use on the tinware that will stand the heat of powdercoating?
Very nice work there. |

Ian our powder coater has had great results with us using ALL METAL filler and it has to be very minimal thickness wise, He said if its verythick it will cause isuues but just a thin skim coat does not give any problems from teh heat and he stressed that AllMetal only , _________________ Joe
