I'll ask the ghia crowd. I am converting my bug to front disc. I got some remanufactured calipers from O'reilly: Cardone 19-459 and 19-458. Nice looking calipers that have the "VW" on them. I also ordered the 2 pin brake pads: D21.
While on lunch break, I tried to test fit the brake pad to the caliper only to find out that the brake pad seems too wide. The holes on the pads are too wide for the pin to go thru let alone slide on the caliper. Can someone tell me how wide the brake pads should be? Just about every other vendor tends to reference these parts for a later Ghia but they do not fit. I wonder if I got the wrong part(s) or the wrong one was sold? Frustated here. |

I read that earlier. At least he got them in. My brake pads seem too big to go in. The hooked 2 pin wont even slide in to the pad. Looking at other stores and internet vendors that model number pops up for that car/year. Maybe the wrong ones got packaged?
If any one can measure the size of the right 2 pin brake pad would be most appreciated.
The brake pads I have now measure about 56mm long. |

looks like the girling style caliper which was only on the late 73-74 ghia, they use a rounded edge style pad.
i would take those calipers back and get the 2 pin ATE style ,which all the repo kits are styled after |

So I got the "ATE" squared brake pads but with a "Girling" Caliper and that is keeping them from matching? Ok so I got the right parts just for two different type of calipers.
Is girling frowned upon since it is no where as common as ATE? Oh well, glad to have learned more about VW calipers. |

I'm sorry to hear about your brake problems - I just went through a front brake issue, so I can relate - it's no picnic.
As much as a PITA it may be for you - I would take them back and insist on a full refund from that - that - "place of business" that you mentioned - the store who's name starts with an "O". It has got to be THE VERY WORSE car parts chain I have EVER seen. Their teenage foulmouthed employees usually do not know a thing about cars ( probably because their mother gives them a ride to work - and they don't have a car ) and half of the time they hardly make eye contact if you are lucky enough to manage to get their attention for help because they are too busy talking about what time they get off of work. If you cannot get satisfaction from the pimple faced "employees" - go to the DISTRICT manager. They must have SOME money, because they flood the radio with ads. Perhaps they get a lot of business because in some smaller towns, they may be the only game in town, and the fact that they hire underpaid kids to work there.
I am NOT generalizing ( perhaps exaggerating a bit, though ; ) - as when I first moved to Seattle they were the only store in the smaller suburb of West Seattle in which I live. And ALL of their stores I have had the pleasure to "visit" have had these same issues.
I would not even use air for my tires from one of their stores. I would walk 10 miles home in the blinding snow rather then fill my severely overheated cars' radiator with some of their water " ... DUH - is that H2O or R2O?". I shall never darken their doors again. (Can you tell that I am not a fan)?
Boy, do I digress - once again - sorry to hear about your calipers and good luck. |

I took them back and got an easy refund. Back to the drawing board. I will look for "run of the mill" ATE. I learned something on vdub calipers today.
I never had issues with my flaps. I have no problem buying quality parts like timken wheel bearing and reman parts. Plus the limited lifetime warrany (as long as you don't act out in neglect) beats an online vendor who might not taken em, ask you to pay to ship or flat tell you 90warranty.
Again, glad i asked about these calipers i bought and sent back. |

a friend gave me some calipers to use on a project. they had some odd ovalish pads. I went to several LONG TIME vw shops and they could not figure them out. I saw an add here on the Samba that showed the pads so I picked them up. They would not fit no matter how much fiddling. I finally figured out that the paint build up on the edges caused the bind. filed it off and they went in fine. the calipers were the last versions used on the ghia. 73 1/2 74. There are a lot of oddities out there.
If you are not going for original many of the better mail order shops can send you a nice matching pair with the pads. Most repops are based on the single pin square pad design as that was the most commonly produced.
Good luck. |
