I know that some of the guys on here were interested in running the UN1 gearbox and a Subaru engine so.. there you are Smile

The guys at Busprojekt also offer output flanges, flange adapters, shifter kits etc to do your conversion along with some other fairly nice stuff.

I'm nothing to do with them - just passing on what I've seen.

Out of curiosity, what do they do in order to run the gearbox backwards? Is there some sore of reversed ring and pinion or something?

The UN1 is one of those rare gearboxes where the standard crown/pinion are cut so that the pinion hits the crown in the centre, so you can just flip the diff over - job done.

The UN1 is used in many cars including Renault 25s (front engined), Renault GTA (rear engined), Lotus Esprit Turbo V8 etc although it's not that reliable with that much hp.

It is a usable gearbox though.

We actually had one car with the UN1 in the United States - the Renault Medallion, so there is a small but inexpensive supply of them in wrecking yards. I guess technically speaking, the Delorean used it too, but there won't be many of those around.

I think the main disadvantage of using the UN1 in a Vanagon is that it is a long transmission and doesn't fit behind the transverse member. Other than that, it is an inexpensive gearbox that seems to be pretty strong. And you can adapt just about any 091 compatible bellhousing to it by making an aluminum adaptor plate to go between the bellhousing and the transmission body. Alika in Hawaii did this and bolted a Smallcar bellhousing to one with great success.

Just a little tid bit of somewhat useless info. Surprisingly the DeLorean transmissions are still available brand new here in North America. Stephen Wynn purchased the DeLorean inventory after the DMC bankruptcy and started several DMC only repair centers around the US. I have seen pictures of hundreds of them still in the crates at their facility in Humble, TX. Probably not cost effective but available. A lot of people are not aware almost 10,000 DeLoreans made it to the USA. There is quite the following.

That price is very close to what paid for a 091/1 rebuilt with 4.14 ring and pinion, .77 4th and oil plates. So it is not that out of the park.

That's what I meant.

You can get a 5 speed from Go Westy with the gearing of your choice in it for that amount of money. And you don't need to fabricate a shifting system, special flywheel, clutch, etc. or any of that jazz - just bolt it in.

Some other Renault had the older version of the UN1, the 369 I think it's called.
There was one for sale on Craigslist TN about 2 years ago for a song….

The advantage of the UN1 over the VW transaxle is the torque it can handle, that tranny is a perfect match for a TDi > 90 Hp.
There are plentiful kits to beef it up and add even a 6th speed.
There is TBD differential available from Quaife as well for it.

You can't always have plug and play Wink
