I have a dumb question that I am hoping somebody can help me with. I have a 72 super beetle and it has the stock oil bath air cleaner. I was just wondering if a 73 or 74 air cleaner with the paper filter will fit. It also has the stock Solex 34PICT-3 carb. I purchased a used 73 air cleaner but the only problem I am having is that the breather hose that goes down to the oil filler looks much larger on the newer air cleaner. Any suggestions from anybody?

An equally dumb follow-up question: When you say, "the breather hose looks much larger"... have you tried to actually fit it over the existing oil filler tube yet? If you measure the tube that the hose attaches to on the 73 air cleaner, and compare that to the tube on the oil filler tube, as long as they're not too different, you might be able to get rubber hose flexible enough to fit over both tubes.

No, I actually have not. I will give that a try and see if I can stretch it over there. I was think that if not I might be able to clamp the larger hose to the oil filler tube so I will give that a try as well. Thanks for the response.

Find--and cut to size--a section of the hose that fits on the plastic air cleaner. Attach the smaller hose inside the larger one, and clamp but ends of the larger hose.

Do the above if there really is a difference in the hose inside diameter.

yes the hoses are different sizes between the oil bath and paper filters.
The oil bath has a down spout off the filler while the paper does not. and the nipple is in a different position.
