The only leak under my Thing is what drips out of the breather tube after driving. Don't mind my garage...use a flattened cardboard box; but others don't like my Thing to relieve itself in puddles on their driveway ! Suggestions? Thanks.

I forgot to mention that the breather tube goes straight down from below the oil fill, then through the pan and below. Thanks again.

Are you running a stock motor with the stock oil bath air cleaner? If not, you may want to looking into an aftermarket breather box or search here on the Samba for ideas on how to make one. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=224958&highlight=breather+box

If you are running a stock motor and air cleaner, make sure the hose from the oil fill/breather tube is connected to the air cleaner.

Are you talking about the road draft tube? It should have a rubber boot at the bottom like this, but that often goes missing: http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=311115541

I used your brother's photo knowing it was probably 100% factory correct. Wink So what is the hose from the oil fill over to the air cleaner for? Question

It is the same as the early one with the tube but the late system was a little bit more of a closed system so it breathes thru the air cleaner and yes my brothers engine is as close to 100% as you will fine except for the new one we are building. thanks

Towel Rail: That is what I am looking for ! Thank you. Yes, my thing for some reason, the PO installed a B series '70 engine. It runs great, but when the time comes (financially) I will spring for a rebuilt AM engine.

Cool. With these cars, it's a wonder that any of them still have their original engines, if they were driven much. My car came to me with an engine and transmission from a '71 Ghia, of all things. It would be neat to have an AM block back in there. Cool

Just reading through this thread because I'm right in the middle of all this. My tpTjing came with its original AM case but had been enlarged to an 1835 with a Dellorto DRLA 36 carb. The PO cut a hole through the above deck to make room for the carb and filter. Had all the seals changed and a tune up done when I bought it but it leaks a constant stream of oil. I pulled the motor out and am saving up for a rebuild into a reliable 1776. Until then, I just installed a 1600 single port from my friends 70 Ghia and bought a stock filter assembly.

Having no opportunity to take pics before I'm looking for any reference pics or diagrams showing how the whole filter assembly, brackets, hoses, etc attach to the car and motor. Also, does oil need to be added to the filter before using.

Any help or references would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

SCVGuy

It's a red line in the oil bath air filter.

and YES put oil in it!

I think spec says 30wt but any oil is better than none.

I believe I have 5w20 in mine just cause it was all I had at the time I changed it., little thinner but it's still oil.
