So, I now have this set of align bore tools:

It’s for 36hp, that’s what diameter of the cutters and end blocks are, and also the cutter locations on the bar itself.

Notice the hand crank.

My question? How does the bar advance? How does that advance mechanism work? It doesn’t look like the later hydraulic type.

Stories about actually using one of these old devices would be especially liked

It feeds by the same principle, hydraulic screw

It will feed backward if you turn it backward.
I would assume it has a bypass valve you could open, but I'm not sure. i don't SEE one.
It is patented design, you can maybe look up the patent and see the drawings. I have the model for boring small holes, cummins 855 turbo and oil pump rebuilding,
and they had another big one for boring cummins 855 for cylinder repair sleeves. Porta-tool was neat stuff
