So I had the notorious knock in the back end when a CV goes bad so I bought new Thing CV joints from The Thing Shop and the dam thing is still knocking when I start off.
So now what do I do ? What else makes this kind of knocking noise when you take off. One thing I know is if I just idle off the line it's quiet. I did try to measure with a protractor and it looks like I'm at a 22 degree angle could I just be to much of an angle ?

I assume your new CV's are properly greased, looked and felt OK, etc.
Probably a stupid question, but is it possible that the noise is coming from your rear brakes? Like lug bolts clicking against brake parts, or debris in the drum, etc.
I would raise one rear wheel at a time, and spin the tire slowly in both directions by hand. It might help you locate the source of the noise, whether from your CV's or from elsewhere.
Good luck, Mondshine |

Well I tried what you suggested and there was play on the drivers side so I took it off for a closer look. All I know is the joint didn't want to move to easy almost like it was stuck on one side. I ordered another one this time just from RockAuto hopefully this one will work right. I've driven about 150 miles so I hope the next one lasts a little longer. |

JZ-
Your mention of the joint not moving easily makes me wonder if the joint was assembled correctly.
I assume you know about the "wide-to-narrow" business of the relationship between the inner and outer races. It is possible to assemble the joint "wide-to wide" and the joint will be locked up so that it cannot pivot.
It might be worth a look, while you have it apart.
I haven't replaced my CV's in many years, but I always bought German Lobro CV's. I don't have any experience with the quality of currently available CV's, maybe others will chime in.
I also assume you know that Thing CV's are different than Bus CV's; the maximum articulation angle is greater for the Thing.
Sorry for your pain, I know that messing with CV joints is a royal PITA.
Good luck, Mondshine |
