Posted: Sat Jan 31, 2015 2:28 pm Post subject: What is a new complete FiberFab MG TD 1952 kit worth? |
|
|
I recently visited my wife parent’s home in Southern California. In my father-in-law’s garage is new, in the boxes, a complete, deluxe Fiber Fab, 1952 MG TD kit. I convinced him to let me see if I can help him sell it. At this point he will not be building the car. The kit is the vintage one from decades past. Like a time machine garage find...
Any help appreciated. K-mann (from the Thingdom kingdom) |

It depends on how well preserved the kit is. Just because it has never been removed from the boxes does not mean the chrome has not started to rust after 20+ years. Also the fiberglass could have started decaying and stress cracking over time and may possably have issues. Vinal and plastics can also deteriorate over time. Does it have the full assembly instruction book?
If everything is in top shape I'd guess a price of around 2 or 3 grand for a complete kit. I've seen complete running & driving MG Kits cars sitting unsold with $6,000 price tag. They just don't seem to be as popular as they were 30 years ago. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Thanks. The kit has been stored in a closed in garage which should help. Time still has a way of doing odd things toucher parts... Some store perfectly while others seem to rot away after a few years. Location of storage asn dryness are always a plus. |

The biggest thing will be if the body was stored on something stable and flat, that supportted it well and kept it from twisting. Someone will be happy to get the kit from you. If it's all kept inside it should be in really good shape.

The boxes have been stored flat on a concrete pad inside of a closed garage in Southern Cal. I bet its in great shape. |

That would require a trip to CA and opening a bunch of unopened boxes. Sadly, none of this will happen. If you are just looking for generic pictures of the kit ou can find them on the FibrerFab web site I suspect. Sorry for my lack of images. |

Completely understandable. If you are interested in purchasing the kit, you can PM me your phone number. I will then, pass it on to my father-in-law afor him to contact you. shipping is easy. I do it world wide with big VW stuff all the time... |

The MGs never achieved the price point of the FF/CMC Porsche 356 Speedster. $2500 is probably max - $1200 for a quick sale. Like another poster pointed out registered, complete running MG's go for $8k. The chrome grille if it has perfect chrome is worth $1200 by itself. They are cool cars when completed - light weight so really spirited even with stock VW engine. (Check paperwork he has - as some kits are designed for Fort Pinto or Chevy Chevette poser and not VW). Check for mice in carpets and upholstery bags! Free build manuals are downloadable from the internet. thanks,
but I couldn't possibly make an offer on something I couldn't see. reference pictures are good, but, that's not the actual kit that is for sale.
it's a pot luck shot buying something you can't see, and, the price would reflect that.
sorry to say it, but making an offer on that type of deal would not be anywhere close to what, I'm sure, he would want to get for it.
plus, I would have the shipping to consider, and, don't have any idea of how big, or, how many boxes there are.
I can post this on another site that is mostly for TDR's, but, I feel that you might get the same results, with no pictures. |

These kits are no longer made, except for one version in New Zealand that is not authentic and very expensive. If someone likes the car, this is an exceptional find and should be snapped up. I have an MG-TF kit car, and that model was never made in the U.S., and is no longer made anywhere. The finished car is beautiful and a faithful replica, though VW powered. I had someone tell me that even though it is very nice it is only worth a couple of grand because it is a kit car. My response, of course, was it is not for sale. I have been offered as much as $18K, but my response was the same. MG-TD's are more common with several companies making the kits in the U.S. years ago, but increasingly hard to find in good condition. Authentic British parts such as bumpers, lights, etc. are still available through such dealers as Moss Motors. |

As usual this forum continues to a real delight. thanks for all the valuable feedback. First, I totally agree that long distance car resto deals are not for the novice or the faint hearted. I am currently finishing a full Thing resto for a guy in Iowa and the car is being restored here in the Colorado mountains. Car resto at best is a heavy hearted disappointment for those not familiar with repeated failure to gain final success. Lots of road block, dark alley and dusty roads to travel to build a vintage car.. True dreams never come cheap.. Yes, I would greatly appreciate you posting this kit on any an all MG TD or VW based kit car forums. Feel free to include my contact info. I also greatly appreciate the information on the availability of this kit. Knowing my father-in law now for over 45 years, I am sure he bought the super high end kit with all the frills. This car was a bucket dream from his youth when he almost got a 52 MG TD from a guy for driving him to the airport but was unable to do it because he had kids, a wife asn job... Now he is over 80 and caring for his wife who is declining mentally day by day. And so life goes and goes... |

well put,
but who's to say what you're buying, when you can't see what you're actually paying for. |

MG Magic still carries parts for these cars too. They bought out the CMC stock when they folded years ago.

That kit was probably $4995 plus $1400 shipping back in 1990 or so. Now if he had bought Microsoft or Apple stock then - he could retire to Hawaii! _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

I bought an unbuilt kit 2 years ago. paid $3450. which probably was too much but I wanted the project more than the car, Just retired. What I can tell you I got looked like it was manufactured yesterday. the foam for the seats I expected to be dust but it is fresh. the vinyl for the seats came out with some heavy wrinkle lines that I have been able to get fairly flat. The fenders and all fiberglass parts were still wrapped in 35 year old paper and when I unwrapped them they were as shiny as possible. The body tub had been unwrapped and was quite oxidized. Some marine deoxidizer and boat wax brought it back a long way but still different from fenders. Chrome parts better than you get today. reasonably this seller needs to find a way to get a picture particularly if the F/G is still paper wrapped. there should be wiring gauges and a truckload of hardware as well as carpet and canvas |
